Time for a tune up?

I was recently doing the weekly watering of our plants (inside and out,) descaling the coffee maker, cleaning the kitty litter, vacuuming the floors and began thinking about maintenance. Everything needs maintenance to survive, work well, and in some cases thrive; living and non-living things. It got me thinking: how much attention, care, nurture, maintenance do I give to the things that aren't tangible?

Like the relationships with my family out of state, with friends who I don't see everyday, my mental health... the list could go on. As a gardener, I'm pretty aware of the tending plants need to grow and thrive. The soil needs to be full of nutrients, every plant needs their time of sun, weeds have to be pulled, invasive bugs need to be spotted and removed, and regular watering needs to be kept up with.

So what do I need, do you need to maintain healthy and thriving mental health?

* What 'weeds' do I need to look out for and uproot?

* What 'bugs' do I need to keep an eye out for and remove?

* What 'waters' my spirit and soul?

* How do I position myself for the 'sun' I need?

A Personal Note

Front Row & Center!

I love the theatre. I recently went to see Six the Broadway Show. The friend I went with and I had entered a ticket lottery and she won. We had to decide if we would pay for tickets not knowing if we would get to sit together, and the view could be obstructed.

We took a risk and said, let's do it. Well, we got the tickets at the box office and they were next to each other and labeled, "Main Center." I thought these are gonna be good! We showed our tickets to the usher, and she said, front row!

I have to admit, I panicked a bit at this point, I'm not one for a front row seat. I prefer sitting in the back. But here we were, front row, center. I worked through some thoughts and feelings of anxiety and thoroughly enjoyed the show.

I took a calculated chance and ended up with what some may say were the best seats in the house. Sometimes the "what if" can go the best possible way.

6 Reasons to Have a Weekly

Family Meeting

Did you have family meetings when you were a kid? Were they a regular occurrence or only when there was a crisis or situation that warranted it? Depending on your experience, your feelings about them might range from fond memories to dread. But the truth is, family meetings don’t have to be something tied to negative connotations or memories for your own family.

Establishing a weekly family meeting can have a lot of great benefits for both individual members and the family as a whole.

Here are 6 reasons to start one:

1. It’s intentional time for the whole family to communicate.

Whether your family is big, small, or somewhere in between, communication that includes the entire family isn’t going to be perfect. Chances are you might forget to let someone know about the plans for next weekend, or only half the family is on the same page about the new screen time rules. A regular meeting provides a standing chance for members to make sure everyone is in the know and no one is unintentionally left in the dark.
