DAMIEN HIGH SCHOOL | DECEMBER 2019
ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
DEAR FELLOW ALUMNI
As 2019 comes to an end, we begin to focus on
travels, fixed schedules, studying for exams, or
reporting to supervisors at work.

However, take a moment for yourself and remember the joys of this season: God’s Blessings, family & friends. Making the season a little bit more special, keep in mind your Spartan Brothers and the great happenings at Damien over the past year and what’s to come in the New Year.

With our focus on reconnecting Damien Alumni, we have had a variety of socials and on campus events throughout 2019. If you have not received information and would like to, please contact us! We look forward to sharing some drinks, appetizers and great conversation with even more of you in 2020. As we continue to thrive, we want to invite you to become more involved with all that Damien offers. We are eager to hear about your professional successes, families, hobbies, ventures, or simply to just say hello.

As our Spartan Family celebrates our 60th Anniversary, we remember all of the alumni, teachers, Priests, coaches and other staff that has made us what we are today. As 2020 approaches, my wish is that each one of you experiences happiness, good health, and blessings. From all of us in the Advancement Office we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

We'll Return Again!

FOR THE FUTURE
THE CLASSIC AT DAMIEN
DECEMBER 26-30, 2019
In December of 1981, the inaugural ‘Damien Cage Classic’ first took place. At the time Ray Plutko, then Commissioner of the CIF was a part of the Damien Booster Club, as three of his sons are alumni (Greg ‘82, Gary ‘84, Scott ‘86) of Damien and played basketball. He had the idea to start a basketball tournament and Ray served as the original tournament director. At the time, Coach Mike LeDuc was in his third year as Head Basketball Coach at Damien.

In January of 2016, the idea floated around to resurrect the original tournament. Now in its fourth year, ‘The Classic’ has made a name for itself on the West Coast as the premiere high school event. With each year the event grows and draws more attention within the basketball community...the History of “The Classic” lives on…

This year, will no doubt be the strongest fi eld ever: 2018 Platinum champion Rancho Christian – led by the No. 1 player in the country and 2018 Classic at Damien Most Outstanding Player, 7-foot, USC-bound Evan Mobley-as well as some of the nation’s and state’s top programs: Birmingham, Damien, Etiwanda, Fairfax, St. Bernard’s and St. John Bosco. Newcomers to the event include Sierra Canyon with 2020 McDonald’s All-Americans Ziaire Williams (unsigned) and B.J. Boston (Kentucky) as well as sons of NBA legends LeBron James, Bronny James, and Dwyane Wade, Zaire Wade. Damien Memorial High School will be a first time participate. The 2019 Hawaii State Champion will open against the host Spartans on December 26 @ 7:30 pm

60TH ANNIVERSARY
ALUMNI PRE-GAME TAILGATE
@ HOMECOMING 2019

We’ll Return Again! No doubt, that was the case on Friday, October 11, as over 500 people attended the 60th Anniversary Pre-Game Tailgate. Spartans from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s brought family and friends to celebrate the 60 years of Pomona Catholic Boys (1959-67) and Damien High School (1967-present) history. We wish to thank our sister schools,
Pomona Catholic Girls High School and St. Lucy’s Priory High School, for their participation and support. We are looking forward to Homecoming 2020! Go Spartans!
