ALUMNI NEWSLETTER
DEAR FELLOW ALUMNI
|
Given the many ways I engage with alumni,
I am mindful of the memories that connect you to Damien, as well as the distance at which most of you live from campus.
I also know your extraordinary loyalty, thoughtfulness, and interest with the community here. So I wanted to take some time, in the midst of the fall splendor, to give you my sense of where we are and where we
are going.
As we began our 60th Anniversary year (1959-1967 Pomona Catholic & 1967-Present Damien) we started the new school year with an alumni golf event at Sierra Lakes Golf course with about 40 alums ranging from 1972 – 1999. What a day of stories, laughter, memories. We continued with our alumni socials the last Thursday of every month as well as our pre-game football gatherings. We are looking to grow our events into basketball and baseball seasons as well. Also, we are searching for additional ideas that we could help our brotherhood reconnect and have a reason to gather.
Our 60th year brings a special feeling to homecoming this year. Homecoming will take place October 11 vs. Chino Hills.
A pregame event will be hosted by the Alumni Office for the
Tri-School Community and all years are welcome. The classes of ’69, ’79, ’89, ’99, & ’09 will be recognized. Food, drinks, DJ, and a ticket to the game will be provided. It will be from 4pm – 6:30pm in the senior parking lot across from the entrance to Dick Larson Stadium. If you should have any questions or would like to RSVP for the event please contact me directly.
The new school year is off to a great start and I look forward to continuing to grow our Damien Community. Please never hesitate to reach out directly with any questions, concerns, or ideas. I highly encourage each one of you to reengage, get involved and
continue to make Damien such a special place.
We'll Return Again!

THOMAS BECK (’69)
CITY OF ARCADIA, CITY COUNCIL
ATTORNEY
In 1959, the doors of Pomona Catholic Boys High School were opened to its first incoming freshmen class. During the 2019-20 academic year, we
are celebrating the rich history of ideas and discoveries that shaped the lives of every young boy that entered Pomona Catholic and Damien to
become “Men of Service, Scholarship and Faith.”
This 60 year promise, no doubt, describes the journey of life and success for Thomas Beck. Born in 1951 in Upland, Tom attended local public schools before moving on to Damien High School in La Verne. In 1973, graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a degree in Business Administration. He then attended Loyola Law School and received his law degree in 1977. Tom’s specialty was representing the catastrophically injured and wrongful death.
Tom is the founding partner of Thon, Beck, Vanni, Callahan & Powell which represents seriously injured tort victims and achieved record jury verdicts. Beck’s list of accomplishments and awards read for pages- he is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been repeatedly acknowledged in Southern California SUPER LAWYERS top 100 attorneys and also Pasadena Magazine Top Attorneys. Beck also published many articles of interest to trial attorneys and lectured frequently on trial topics.
In scholarship, he has been recognized for his legal success: One of the 50 Inspirational Alumni in History of the School, Loyola Law School; Lifetime Achievement for Exemplary Community Service, Pasadena Bar Association; Daniel O’Connell Award, Irish American Bar Association; Donald R. Wright Distinguished Service Award, Pasadena Bar Association; President’s Award of Merit, Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles.
Winston Churchill once said, “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” It is in service where Tom put his heart into giving and building a community. His activities and philanthropy have changed lives for the better. He has been an eight-year member of the Loyola Marymount Board of Regents, four years as the Chair of Membership for the Executive Committee; he has been a chair or member of Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center, St. Thomas More Society of Los Angeles, Presentation Sisters of Watts, Methodist Hospital Foundation, Stillpoint Resources, Loyola Marymount University Alumni Association, and was formerly on the Loyola Law School Board of Overseers. From 1986-92, he was on the Tournament of Roses, Committee. In 1992, he was the founding chairmen of the Designing Dads parent volunteer group at Highland Oaks Elementary School. He participated in HELPS International as a member of the medical team. He has coached youth baseball, basketball and soccer with the Santa Anita Little League, YMCA and AYSO.
For all of his contributions in service, Tom has been honored with numerous awards: City of Los Angeles Certificate of Recognition for charitable work in the community of Watts; San Miguel School Recognition Award, La Salle High School “De La Salle” Medal; La Salle High School “Lasallian Volunteer of the Year Award.”
Wanting to have three careers in his lifetime, Tom retired in 2012. He remains a licensed attorney, but turned his focus to civic duty. Tom was a first-time candidate in April 2014 and was elected onto the Arcadia City Council that year. In 2016-2017, he served his first
term as Mayor. He currently represents District 2 for Arcadia.
As we all know, you must have faith in yourself, life and love. Tom married Jerilyn (“Jeri”) in 1978 and they moved to Arcadia in 1985 to raise their family. Tom’s four children attended Highland Oaks and Foothill Middle School. Ryan, a medical doctor, is married and currently is in a Fellowship at UCLA Neuro-Radiology. Alison is a Los Angeles-area magazine/catalog stylist. Jenifer Sojka is a retired Special Education teacher and now a stay at home mom in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Ohio. Her husband John received his M.D. degree from Ohio State University Medical School in May 2016. He is in a General Surgery residency. Sean is a recent graduate of Loyola Marymount University. He is in management at Dish Network Corp. in Los Angeles.
In leisure, Tom’s hobbies include hiking, snow skiing, travel, and spending time in Cambria.
As a Spartan alum, we know this to be true,
“We’ll Return Again!”
Tom did just that in 2016 as the Graduation Commencement Speaker. As an alum, when you return to the halls of Pomona Catholic/Damien, you will remember that promise of helping boys become
“Men of Service, Scholarship and Faith.”
There is no doubt, Tom Beck, Class of 1969, did just that.

Our work has implications for understanding Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancers and other human diseases.

LEGENDARY DAMIEN HEAD FOOTBALL COACH DICK LARSON PASSES AWAY
|
|
The Damien Family is sad to share that legendary football coach Dick Larson passed away on Sunday, September 1. He was surrounded by family and loved ones. Rest In peace coach, we know you are already on the sidelines in heaven.
Dick Larson roamed the sidelines and brought two CIF championships to the school during his 23-year tenure. He recorded 174 victories, had 80 of his players compete at Division I schools and 15 went on to play professional football.
He is well known around Damien for coining the phrase, “Faith, Family, Football”, which is still
used today for Damien Football.
The family has asked for those wishing to honor Coach, to please contribute to the Richard L Larson Scholarship Fund: On the form, please check the box “I would like to dedicate this donation” and type in Dick Larson.
