New Criminal Background
Regulations Coming July 1

On March 27th,  the California Office of Administrative Law (OAL) approved  new regulations relating to the use of criminal background information in employment decisions. These regulations will be filed with the Secretary of State's office and are effective on July 1, 2017.  Employers will have additional burdens under the new regulations.

As  previously reported, the California Fair Employment and Housing Council (FEHC) proposed these criminal history regulations last year.
In addition to reiterating existing prohibitions on the use of criminal history information in California, the regulations require employers to demonstrate that any criminal history information sought is job-related and consistent with a business necessity.

Co-founders and lifelong Laguna Beach residents Brent Reynard and Mike Lombardo spent many afternoons homebrewing, discussing how to turn their love for brewing into a business. After many years and many, many beers, they decided to take the leap and launch Laguna Beach Beer Company in 2014.
With the little capital they had the two invested in a couple of new fermenters and began leasing space at an established brewery run by a close friend of theirs in Northern California.  After 2 years of good fortune, determination and an overwhelming amount of support from their friends, family and local beer drinkers they have reached their goal and will soon be opening their very own local brewery.

Opening in Laguna Beach on Spring 2017, stay tuned!

Running a small business is tough, and managing your compliance with California and federal employment laws isn't always easy. There's a lot to know.

Just ask the businesses who thought they were following the law until faced with costly fines and penalties for breaking California labor and employment laws. Such laws include providing employees with time to rest, giving employees time to stay home when they are sick, and paying daily and weekly overtime.

Join CalChamber's top California employment law experts, Erika Frank and Erika Pickles, for a free 30-minute webinar on March 30. They'll cover the five most common questions that small businesses ask our Labor Law Helpline advisers.

Frida Kahlo - Her Photos offers an intimate glance into the life of one of the world's most beloved artists. Throughout her life, Kahlo meticulously collected over 6,000 photographs of loved ones as well as scenes of Mexican culture, politics, art, history and nature.

These photographs were taken by many renowned creatives of the time. After her death, the collection was locked away by a grieving Diego Rivera in Kahlo's Mexico City family home, Casa Azul or the Blue House. More than fifty years later, this treasured collection was revealed to the public. Visitors to the exhibition will discover some of the brightest and darkest times in the artist's life while also experiencing a unique view of the tumultuous political and technological climate of the early to mid 20th Century.

Would you like to help keep an eye on Orange County's transportation tax dollars? If so, consider applying to volunteer on the Measure M Taxpayer Oversight Committee (TOC). TOC members serve a 3 year term, monitoring OCTA's use of revenue collected through Measure M2, the county's half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements. The TOC is celebrating 10 years of ensuring that all Measure M2 funds are spent on voter-approved transportation projects.
The application deadline to fill two positions on the 11-member committee, one each in Second and Third Supervisorial Districts, is May 1.
