Greetings!
Join us this Saturday, March 7, from 8–11 p.m. in the Keith House Community Room for a contra & square dance called by
Anne Marie Walter
, with music by
The Dog Branch Cats
.
Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for ages 10-18, and a youth under 10 is free.
Beginners of all ages are welcome. Come as a single or couple. If you arrive at 8, you’ll get started with basic dancing tips and instruction.
Anne Marie Walter calls regularly in the Asheville area. She has a particular appreciation for energetic dances that flow. Whether the dance requires a bit of thinking or allows you to turn off your brain and just move to the music. She sees much of her job as becoming invisible, selecting the right dances that allow the band to shine. Accomplished in both Contra and English Country dances, she also enjoys the kind of community dances that appeal to families.
The Dog Branch Cats were formed in 1992 with Bob Dalsemer and Jan Davidson, fiddles, Martha Owen, banjo and David Liden, guitar, Geraud Barralon on bass and Annie Fain Barralon on banjo uke. They play lots of danceable old time tunes along with some lively New England and Celtic reels.

Delve into the wonders of traditional Appalachian dance, singing, and music. As a group, experience flatfooting and freestyle clogging steps, as well as traditional play-party games and dances geared to young people and older adults (wonderful for educators). We'll learn and sing beautiful and joyous traditional Appalachian songs and ballads as a means to explore the remarkable cultural history and heritage of the region. As time and access allow, try Appalachian instruments, too, such as the mountain dulcimer, limberjack, and banjo. All levels welcome.
