ABOUT DAPHNE ODJIG (1919–2016)
Daphne Odjig, a distinguished Anishinaabe
(Odawa-Potawatomi-English) artist from Wikwemikong Unceded Territory, stands as one of the most significant figures in contemporary Indigenous art.
Often referred to as the "Grandmother of Indigenous Art in Canada", Odjig played a central role in shaping a national artistic movement. She was a founding member of the Professional Native Indian Artists Inc. (PNIAI) in 1973—known widely as the “Indian Group of Seven”—which helped bring Indigenous art into the mainstream and shifted the cultural landscape of Canadian art history.
Her accolades include the Order of Canada (Member and later, Officer), Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, an Induction into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Daphne also holds numerous honorary doctorates and her works have been exhibited internationally in major museums and galleries.
Most recently, her latest honour is a celebration of her life and art with a limited release 2025 coin from the Royal Canadian Mint. For every print purchased from this newsletter, we will include an uncirculated coin depicting Daphne's "Folk Singer" image from this collection.
Daphne was an outstanding artist and a wonderful person. On a personal note, she was a friend for many years, and when my daughter Patti was two, she joined us for her birthday party!
