Mayor's Message

My motivation for writing this “message” was my recent visit to Kingswood Academy where I had a chance to visit each class from preschool through eighth grade. Their excitement for learning was clearly evident on each of their faces.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

- Malcom X

As summer winds down and backpacks are packed, the start of a new school year marks more than just a return to routine – it signals a fresh beginning for our children. From the tiny steps of preschoolers and kindergarteners walking into their classrooms for the first time, to high school and college freshmen stepping onto campus with wide-eyed anticipation, each milestone brings opportunities for growth, discovery, and transformation.

For our youngest learners, the school year opens a door to a world beyond home – filled with friendships, new ideas, and the first lessons in independence. They learn not only the ABC’s, but also how to share, cooperate and navigate a larger world.

As students grow, so do the challenges and triumphs. Middle and high schoolers begin to form deeper social connections and explore their identities, while developing the academic foundation for their futures. College freshmen face the most dramatic shift—often leaving home for the first time and learning to balance freedom with responsibility.

In every stage, the start of school is a powerful reminder that growth and learning are continuous. It is a time of nervous excitement and endless possibility, where each child—regardless of age, is given a fresh page to write their own story.

As the new school year begins, we are reminded that every fresh start holds the promise of what is to come, and every student, no matter how small or grown walks forward into that promise with hope, courage and curiosity. Best wishes to all of our children, and grandchildren on this next journey in their lives, may it truly be a rewarding one.

City of Darien Launching Online Permitting

The City of Darien is excited to announce the launch of our new online permitting system, OpenGov. Residents and contractors will be able to apply for permits, upload documents, pay fees, and schedule inspections all through one convenient online portal.

During our transition, we anticipate some growing pains as we move from paper-based applications to a fully digital system. We kindly ask for your patience as staff and the public adjust to this new process.

If you have any questions or technical issues, please contact Ryan Murphy, Senior Planner at rmurphy@darienil.gov or (630) 353-8113. Learn More.

Metropolitan Alliance of Police Annual Telephone Solicitation Process

The Metropolitan Alliance of Police (M.A.P.) is the labor union representing patrol officers and sergeants employed by the Darien Police Department for collective bargaining and legal representation purposes. Typically, M.A.P. solicits residents and businesses within Darien once a year and that time is here.

The Darien Police Department would like to remind residents and business owners that solicitations made on behalf of the Metropolitan Alliance of Police are, without exception, made by employees of professional fundraising enterprises and not Darien police officers or sergeants. Donations requested in the name of M.A.P. fundraising efforts go to support union activities and are not given to the Darien Police Department. Learn more.
