Mayor's Message

“Let’s remember: a strong city isn’t just one that runs efficiently, it’s one where people feel they belong, and that begins with all of us.”

In recent months, I have noticed a growing trend – residents reaching out not just with concerns or complaints, but with a deep need to be heard. They often begin by raising a concern; a problem with a neighbor, or frustration about something in the city, but as the conversation unfolds, it becomes clear, more than anything, they simply seek a connection, They want to feel heard, to feel seen, to know they matter, and that they are not alone.

This quiet need is becoming more common in communities everywhere, and it speaks to something deeper; our growing disconnection from one another. In a world where so much communication happens online or in passing, the simple act of being present for someone has become both rare and powerful.

As community leaders and as neighbors, we have a responsibility and an opportunity to change that; strong communities are built not just on policies or infrastructure, but on human relationships. When we make time to listen; when we show up for one another without needing a reason, we strengthen the very foundation of civic life. Whether its through a phone call, a wave across the yard, or a shared moment at a local event, each small act of connection adds up.

That’s why I want to encourage you to take a small meaningful step; invite a friend or neighbor to join you at one of our Darien Summer events at Westwood Park. On July 31 and August 28, we have our summer concerts in the park, while on August 8, 9th and 10th, we will be conducting our Darienfest weekend. These concerts and carnival are more than just evenings of great music and entertainment under the stars, they are opportunities to reconnect – with old friends, with new neighbors, and with the spirit of community that makes Darien such a special place to call home.

You never know what that invitation might mean to someone; it just might be the conversation they needed, or the one you didn’t know you needed too! So, let’s continue to look out for one another, not just in times of crisis, but in everyday moments of joy, music and shared presence. That’s how we strengthen our community – not with grand gestures, but by simply showing up for one another. Try it, and open up your world to new possibilities and friendships.

Darien to See a Second Fiber Installer to Begin Installing Fiber Infrastructure Within the City Parkways/Right of Ways

T Mobile is partnering with Lumos to install fiber optic cable in the parkways in Darien. Work is scheduled to begin the week of July 28.

  • Crews will install fiber using low-impact directional drilling, typically 36 inches underground, within public rights-of-way and utility easements, such as sidewalks, street fronts, between homes, or behind property lines.
  • Work across the neighborhood typically lasts a few weeks. Construction near your specific property generally takes just a few days.
  • You may see construction signs, temporary flags or paint in your yard (used to mark underground utilities), and crews using specialized equipment. Please do not remove the markers—they are essential for safety and will be cleared after construction is complete.
  • Public utility locators do not mark private underground features. To help prevent damage, please mark these items using white flags or landscape-safe spray paint, or notify us at lumosfiber.com/tmoconstruction for assistance.

Yard Waste and Compost Collection

This is a reminder that LRS will collect your compost and yard waste too! You can take advantage of this weekly collection services by combining the organic food scraps from your kitchen with your yard waste and putting them out for collection on the same day as your garbage service. Be sure to review these tips when selecting an acceptable yard waste container:

  • Yard waste bags are to be a minimum of 2-ply, biodegradable paper, not to exceed 30-gallons or 50 pounds’ when full.
  • Any non-LRS containers may be used so long as they do not exceed 33 gallons in size or 50 pounds in weight when full. Containers must clearly indicate YARD WASTE.
  • Yard waste container labels stickers are available at City Hall.
  • Non-LRS containers must have two handles for lifting. LRS does not recommend using your own container as drivers may use the automated lifting mechanism which may damage your container.
  • LRS will not repair or replace non-LRS containers used for yard waste.
