Mayor's Message
“The way we choose to see the world creates the world we see.” - Barry Neil Kaufman

I have always believed that each of us is the composite of all of our previous life experiences. Think about that for a second, can you recall a life experience that has had a significant impact on who you are today? Maybe you lost a position that forced you to reassess your career choice, or maybe you lost a parent, sibling or close relative which had the effect of making you understand how fragile life really is, and how we should never take for granted those we love and hold close to our hearts.

My father, though a loving man, was always very strict, and a part of me always pledged that when I became a parent, my discipline techniques would be completely different from that of my father. As conscious of this as I was, there were times, when disciplining my sons, that I opened my mouth, and “my father’s words” came out. This reminded me of a quote by Philip Pullman who said, “One curious thing about growing up is that you don’t always move forward in time; you move backwards as well, as pieces of your parents and grandparent’s lives come to you.” This realization taught me that my life experiences, especially those involving my parents, have had a serious impact on who I am, and as Ralph Waldo Emerson states, “What lies behind us and what lies before us, are but tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

We may be successful at negating some of the difficulties that have impacted our lives, nonetheless, we always need to be conscious of how they affect us in order to make course corrections as we move through life. You may choose not to look at yourself as the composite of your life experiences; despite that, I hope you take a minute to look at your life and judge as to what may have had an impact on who you are today. Remember, as Barry Neil Kaufman states, “The way we choose to see the world creates the world we see.” I hope what you choose to see is a positive present and future.

Beautification Project

This year’s budget includes beautification of the landscaping and hardscaping of the 75th Street corridor and eight "Welcome to Darien" signs.  Darien’s city arborist worked with a landscape consultant to develop and implement improvements to the existing landscape and further enhance the areas. As you may notice these areas are now torn up and the improvements are underway. This is one of many beautification projects the city has worked on over the years and we plan to continue projects that enhance the beauty of Darien. If you have any suggestions for future beautification projects please contact Bryon Vana, bvana@darienil.gov or (630) 353-8114.

Clarendon Hills Road Closure

The City is continuing the capital investment project along Clarendon Hills Road. This project includes a new sidewalk along the east side of the road from Plainfield Road to 67th Street, the construction of a crosswalk into Community Park, and the installation of a stop light at 67th and Clarendon Hills Road.

During this construction, there will be limited traffic permitted on Clarendon Hills Road within the project limits. Please avoid the area if you can, and watch for road closures and detours that will be in place. The detours will be adjusted as needed during the project. We are planning for the traffic detours to be in place from July 10th through August 7th. For questions, please call Regina at 630-353-8105.
Heat-Related Illness in Children

It's heating up, but there are precautions you can take to protect your family! Not only are infants and children more susceptible to heat-related illnesses, but they also rely on others to keep them safe. Follow these tips to help keep everyone happy and healthy:

  • Never leave infants, children, or pets in a parked car. The temperature can rise to a dangerous level quickly, even with a window open.
  • Dress infants and children appropriately. Loose, light clothing will help them stay cool.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring refillable water bottles along when you leave the house to keep the whole family hydrated.

Find more safety tips and information here.
DuPage County Cooling Centers

If you don't have air conditioning and need to cool off, you can find cooling centers through the DuPage Community Resource Information System (CRIS). The CRIS provides a listing of locations by zip code: click here. And remember that Indian Prairie Library, located at 401 Plainfield Road, serves as a cooling center during its hours of operation.
