Mayor's Message

“A Time to Talk”

By Robert Frost

When a friend calls to me from the road

And slows his horse to a meaningful walk.

I don’t stand still and look around

On all the hills I haven’t hoed.

And shout from where I am

“What is it?”

No, not as there is time to talk.

I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground

Blade end up and five feet tall, and plod:

I go up to the stone wall

For a friendly visit.

I was giving thought to my many friendships just recently, and went looking for a poem that addressed the importance of friendship in our lives. Naturally, I selected my favorite author Robert Frost, and came across his poem, “A Time to Talk.” After reading through it several times, I began to reflect on whether or not the busyness of my life kept me from connecting with others, especially my good friends. I believe Frost is telling us that there are moments when we need to make time to connect with others. He is saying that the work we are doing is less important than the human connections we have with our friends.

One begins to understand that when one of our friends makes an effort to connect, it should be a moment we cherish; Frost contrasts the work of life with the importance of friendship suggesting that true fulfillment comes from the interpersonal moments we share with others, rather than the time we seemed to be consumed by tasks and responsibilities.

After reading this poem, don’t you get the feeling that Frost is telling all of us that friendships are precious, and deserving of our attention and time, no matter how busy we seem to be. Taking time to be with friends is not just an act of courtesy, but a meaningful and vital part of life. While I always felt relationships were crucial, I have adopted the view that relationships and human connections are essential, and we should all make time to assure ourselves that our friendships should be a priority in our lives.

As with all the Frost poems that I have recommended, please take some time to read through it several times to see what it means to you, and how it may reflect on the importance of friendships in your life. If you have time, share your thoughts with me and

your reflection regarding this beautiful, but simple poem.

Spring Forward for Daylight Savings Time!

Daylight Savings begins this Sunday, March 9. When you are moving your clocks forward an hour, also take a minute to check your smoke detectors. Follow these tips from the National Fire Protection Association:

  • Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.

  • Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.

  • When replacing a battery, follow manufacturer’s list of batteries on the back of the alarm or manufacturer’s instructions. Manufacturer’s instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The smoke alarm may not work properly if a different kind of battery is used.

Severe Weather Preparedness Week - Tornado Sirens

In the event of a severe weather emergency, the sirens will sound for 3 to 5 minutes, which indicates:

  • A confirmed sighting of a tornado, tracking towards the community, has been reported by a trained weather spotter within Darien or the surrounding communities, or
  • The National Weather Service has issued a warning for the Community indicating that it is the path of an oncoming tornado, or
  • A confirmed sighting by a trained weather spotter of severe winds causing structural damage within the city or surrounding communities.

There will not be an all clear sounded. If you hear a subsequent siren, that means that more severe weather has been spotted in the area.

Residents should understand that outdoor warning sirens are not designed to provide effective warning inside homes or buildings. It is recommended that each residence have a N.O.A.A. weather radio to monitor severe weather conditions, and that all family members are informed of what to do in a severe weather emergency. There are many free phone apps that will issue severe weather alerts.

DCHD Promotes Measles Prevention and Vaccination for a Healthy Community

In response to the recent measles outbreaks across multiple states, the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD) is reminding residents of the importance of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination, particularly if families are traveling for spring break. Measles is highly contagious and can spread quickly, especially in areas with lower vaccination rates. The best defense is vaccination, which has been proven safe and highly effective.

At this time, there are no known cases of measles in DuPage County. However, measles is highly contagious, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that two doses of the MMR vaccine provide 97% immunity (one dose is about 93% effective), reducing the risk of infection, illness, and helping to prevent outbreaks.

Your doctor’s office or your child’s doctor’s office is usually the best place to receive recommended vaccines. Vaccines may also be available at pharmacies and community health clinics. Use Vaccines.gov to find a location near you, then call or visit their website to make an appointment.

In addition, DCHD provides the MMR vaccine to eligible children through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. This program serves children who are uninsured, underinsured, or Medicaid-eligible. To find additional providers offering vaccines through the VFC program, please visit: Find VFC Providers in Illinois.
