Mayor's Message

“Ambition is the key to success, Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in.” - Bill Bradley

“Do not fear failure, but rather fear not trying.” - Roy T. Bennett

Every one of us, at some point in our lives, has had a dream; a goal we aspire to achieve. Whether it’s pursuing a higher level of education, starting a new business, or contributing meaningfully to an organization, our dreams shape our ambition and give direction to our efforts.

Sometimes, as we all know, the path to achieving those dreams is rarely smooth. Obstacles, detours, and setbacks are inevitable. What separates those who reach their goals from those who don’t often comes down to one word: persistence.

In my time as Mayor of Darien, I have had goals I have been passionate about achieving, and while success or failure is never the result of one factor alone, I can say with certainty that persistence, my willingness to keep pursuing my dream, even when the going got tough, played a crucial role in my success.

Just last week, I was reminded of the power of persistence in a truly unexpected way. A young man named Alfred Park, just thirteen years old, came into City Hall and asked to speak with me. One of our front office staff members stepped into my office to let me know that there was a young man who was anxious to see me regarding a business idea. At that point, I did not realize that I would be meeting a thirteen-year old Boy Scout regarding a business idea.

I soon learned that Alfred was on a mission; he had developed a plan to sell holiday wreaths, handcrafted items and coffees, and he was looking for guidance, and a bit of help from yours truly. As I sat and listened to him, I was struck not just by his well-thought-out plan, but by his initiative. How many thirteen-year-olds have the moxie to walk into City Hall in order to see the Mayor and push a business idea? His determination and self-belief were impressive, but what stood our most was his persistence; his willingness to pursue his goal without hesitation; to push forward despite any fear or uncertainty.

I thought to myself that this young man, Alfred Park will likely be successful, not just in this venture, but in life. His actions reflect a mindset that does not give up, it finds a way, and keeps showing up until he reaches his goal.

Alfred’s story is a reminder to all of us, that whether we are working toward a long-held dream or facing a fresh challenge, we must find the persistence within ourselves to keep going. Whatever obstacles arise, and they will, it is persistence that turns intention into reality.

So, let Alfred’s example inspire all of us; whatever your dream is, large or small, keep at it, keep showing up, keep pushing forward. If you are curious about Alfred’s business plan, I will be more than happy to share it; just send me an email at jmarchese@darienil.gov.

Let’s all find that spark of persistence – because sometimes, that is all it takes!

Grant Award Helps Continue the City’s Efforts Towards Building an Environmentally Supportive Community

Congratulations to the City of Darien Public Works Department on their grant award which will support the purchase of one all-electric truck to replace a vehicle that was recently retired. The grant also includes a dedicated charging station installed at public works. The grant provides for $298,395, which is 75% of the estimated cost. The vehicle will be used for both street and water divisions and will provide staff with an opportunity to evaluate the functionality and performance of an electric truck and confirm the value experienced in other organizations. The City of Darien has been designated an EV Ready Community. The EV Readiness program helped local governments prepare to meet the growing demand for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.

You can learn more about EV Ready Communities here. This is the second recent environmental-related grant awarded to the city’s Public Works Department. In January of this year, the city was awarded a $100,000 subgrant by The Morton Arboretum’s Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) to improve the community tree canopy. Through this subgrant, the City of Darien will plant approximately 200 new trees in eligible areas of the community by the end of Fall 2026.

The City of Darien has always been active in promoting and supporting Environmental causes throughout the city. Read more.

Trick-or-Treat Tips

The City does not have established trick-or-treating hours but recommends trick-of-treating during daylight hours. We suggest residents turn off their outdoor house light when they are finished giving out candy for the night. That will help the trick-of-treaters know to skip your house. Follow these tips from the National Safety Council for a safe Halloween:

  • A responsible adult should accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds.
  • If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.
  • Agree on a specific time children should return home.
  • Teach your children never to enter a stranger's home or car.
  • Instruct children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and stick with their friends.
  • Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home, and take care to avoid any food allergies.

Lawn Sprinkler Winterization Reminder

Lawn sprinkler systems should be winterized soon, if not already. If your backflow preventer is located outdoors, remember to either blow it out or remove & store it somewhere warm for the winter. You may cover it outside with a blanket, towels, or similar items temporarily until it is removed. Insulation and/or heat tape may also be used, but all would be insufficient protection for the winter. Allowing it to freeze is a costly mistake. Learn More
