Petroleum Product Response – Lake Hinsdale Village Pond and Dale Basin-67th Street and Dale Road

Darien/Willowbrook, Illinois — A petroleum discharge was discovered on September 27, 2026, adjacent to the 67th Street/Lake Hinsdale Village pond. The local fire department responded, along with personnel from the Village of Willowbrook and the City of Darien.

Based on information available to date, the material appears to have originated from the storm sewer system south of 67th Street within the City of Darien before entering the storm sewer system along 67th Street and ultimately reaching the pond. The Village of Willowbrook maintains jurisdiction of 67th Street from Clarendon Hills Road to Kingery Highway, including the associated storm sewer infrastructure within its jurisdiction.

The Village of Willowbrook coordinated with DuPage County, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA), and environmental professionals in response to the petroleum product discovered in the pond within Lake Hinsdale Village.

On September 27, 2026, the Village initiated an environmental assessment through Specialized Environmental Services (SES) and began remediation efforts immediately. The following morning, the response team identified a small segment of the Dale Basin, within the City of Darien, that also required remediation. The City of Darien subsequently partnered with the Village of Willowbrook and its environmental contractor, Specialized Environmental Services, to address the affected area.

Testing conducted by the environmental response contractor identified the material as used diesel fuel and motor oil. As of Thursday afternoon, response crews remain on site. The Village of Willowbrook and City of Darien continue to coordinate with the appropriate regulatory agencies and environmental professionals to contain, recover, and properly address the affected material.

Agencies Involved

The response currently includes coordination among:

  • Village of Willowbrook
  • City of Darien
  • Local police and fire personnel
  • DuPage County
  • Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA)
  • Specialized Environmental Services

Village and City officials will continue working with environmental professionals and the appropriate regulatory agencies until the affected material has been contained and removed and the necessary response measures have been completed.

Ongoing Investigation

Based on the information available at this time, the petroleum product appears to have entered the storm sewer system in the vicinity of 67th Street before being conveyed to the Lake Hinsdale Village pond.

The source and circumstances of the discharge remain under investigation. Because the investigation is ongoing, the Village of Willowbrook and City of Darien will not speculate regarding the source, cause, or responsibility for the discharge.

Information will be provided as it becomes available and as the ongoing investigation permits. Additional information is also available here.
