Dark Arts insight - Programme Management

Every reader of this newsletter, wherever they are in the world and in whatever sector, will have a different view on what constitutes programme management. In fact, 20 years after the release of Managing Successful Programmes (MSP®), p rogramme management is the most misunderstood term in the industry today. In fact the Brits and the Americans can't even agree how to spell it. Your interpretation of the phrase will depend on which sector and industry you happen to work in.

So who are we to pass an opinion on this? Well have a look at our contribution to programme management, as opposed to program management!

This newsletter is for those who want to know a bit more or a reminder on some of the core concepts, and includes:
Back to Basics - What is Programme Management? S1

Unbelievable but true - the Managing Successful Programmes framework was published 20 years ago, however, on a recent assessment of a major UK organisation's programme capability, only 10% of people had received any programme management training.

If you want a quick introduction, these two articles may be of interest to you:
  1. A short article explaining MSP® in 2000 words
  2. Our interactive PDF which takes you through the key principles and components of MSP
Introducing Programme Lifecycles - VideoS2

We know most of you won't have time to read complicated articles, so we thought we would persuade the MSP lead author, Rod Sowden, to give us a video overview of the programme lifecycle.

"Seven Deadly Sins" of Programme ManagementS3

This is a part of our Seven Deadly Sins series, focused on the most common errors that cause the biggest problems in the early stages of maturity, and how to avoid them.

Let's face it, we wouldn't be human if we didn't make mistakes, and we have seen many in our time. In the early stages of maturity, there are many common errors that people make when delivering programmes, so we thought we would jot a few down for you. Alternatively for a more visual approach, here is a video version.

No organisation can successfully deliver programmes and projects without an effective framework. Our work on developing the maturity model P3M3® and undertaking assessments of over 100 organisations has enabled us to review a wide range of processes, guidance and tools that are used across a range of sectors.

We've been really sneaky and built a programme and project framework to save you the trouble of doing it. We have a free version you can use or you can have your own version - either way, you can be up and running on your performance improvement journey today - not in a few months' time.
