MIDDLEBURY, IN - Preparation for Thanksgiving Day begins weeks in advance at Das Dutchman Essenhaus. In the week leading up to Thanksgiving, 5,800 pies are made. 1,685 dozen dinner rolls are sold. 75 pairs of hands help prepare the baked goods. More than 15,000 eggs are cracked and stirred. 700 pounds of pumpkins are used to make pumpkin pie. 9,800 apples are peeled and cored. 1,000 gallons of whole milk used, along with 360 quarts of evaporated milk, 3,000 pounds of flour and roughly 3,000 pounds of sugar. We even plan to serve up 350 turkeys! Our guests come all the way from Chicago to Indianapolis to pick up their delectable treats and we prepare over 325 Thanksgiving Dinners To Go which include: turkey or ham, mashed potatoes, dressing or noodles, gravy, green beans or corn, dinner rolls and fresh-baked pie(s).
