MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

December 18, 2023

Last week I flagged The Paper Ceiling ad campaign and this week I want to share a great report just released by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber Foundation. Data Deep Dive: Upskilling and Reskilling our Workforce is full of great information and if you look at nothing else this week, please look at the easy-to-read charts, tables, and graphs in this report. Rather than summarizing the highlights, I’m going to share four key graphics for your review and understanding. It’s a great report and one that is not to be missed.

In closing out 2023, let me thank all of you, our members, and members of the State Chamber staff for another terrific year. We are grateful for your support and look forward to our Annual Dinner, our remodeled office space, and much more in 2024!

Finally, if you are out and about over the holidays and seeing family and friends, remember that our armed forces, first responders, and healthcare, retail, hospitality workers, and many others will be on call. Please remember to thank them for being available when many of us are home celebrating.

News You Can Use

As the year draws to a close, we start today with the home builder confidence index, followed by housing starts and building permits from November on Tuesday. Wednesday brings us existing home sales figures for November. On Thursday we get the results of the U.S. leading economic indicators for November and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing survey for December. Friday will be the busiest day of the week with November results for durable-goods orders, personal income, personal spending, and new home sales.

This is a very light week for earnings calls, but a few significant ones are scheduled. Tuesday is headlined by FedEx, Accenture, FuelCell Energy, and Steelcase. Wednesday calls include General Mills, Toro, BlackBerry, and Winnebago. Nike, CarMax, Carnival, Cintas, and Paychex are on the schedule for Thursday.

Faithful Friends Animal Society was born out of a moral imperative to expose the mass killing of cats and dogs entering Delaware’s publicly funded shelters. For two decades, their advocacy has vastly improved outcomes for shelter animals, saving thousands of easily adoptable, trainable, and treatable pets.
