MAY 2025

CHIA is ramping up for a busy end of spring and start to the summer with several publications on the way!

We want to call out CHIA’s recent reporting on hospital and hospital health system reporting. In April, we released the latest Hospital and Hospital Health System Year-to-Date Financial Dashboard, which includes quarterly financial data for the period through December 2024. Then in May, we updated our Hospital and Hospital Health System Annual Performance Dashboard with hospital fiscal year (HFY) 2024 financial data. This iteration of the dashboard includes annual financial data for all Massachusetts hospitals (excluding three with a fiscal year end of December 31) as well as annual hospital utilization data through HFY 2023 for easy access alongside the financial data.

In our “News You Can Use” segment, we highlight CHIA’s recent work on primary care and behavioral health in Massachusetts, focusing on our reporting of spending in these critical areas.

Earlier this spring, CHIA held its quarterly Oversight Council meeting, which can be livestreamed on YouTube. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18.

As always, you’ll find below a list of upcoming health care-related events that may be of interest to our readers. And if you have any questions or opinions you want to share, please send your feedback to newsletter@chiamass.gov. We always want to hear from our readers.

News You Can Use

Last month, CHIA published its latest report on primary care and behavioral health spending. This report is part of a series of analyses CHIA performs on the state of primary care and behavioral health in Massachusetts.

Primary care and behavioral health comprise an array of vital services that can meaningfully shape patient outcomes and is foundational to a well-performing Massachusetts health care system. CHIA collects data and reports on payments made by health plans to primary care and behavioral health service providers—including insurer-paid and member-cost sharing amounts—as part of its efforts to inform policy initiatives, investments, and delivery system reforms. The PCBH Spending report focuses on spending for primary care and behavioral health services for members enrolled in private commercial, MassHealth, and Medicare Advantage plans for calendar years 2022 and 2023.

CHIA also maintains two dashboards as part of its effort to shine further light on primary care and behavioral health in Massachusetts. These dashboards seek to provide a comprehensive fact-base to inform targeted policy solutions and investments as well as monitor the impact of such reforms.

In the coming weeks, we will be publishing updates to the primary care dashboard and behavioral health dashboard. Both publications include an interactive Tableau report enabling additional data stratifications.
