Award-Winning Schools
Two Englewood schools have received awards from the Colorado State Department of Education based on their student performance on state assessments.

Englewood Leadership Academy (ELA), Englewood’s choice middle school, once again received the John Irwin School of Excellence Award! This award was given to 185 schools statewide and reflects exceptional performance in Math, English Language Arts and Science on the Colorado statewide assessments. ELA received an Exceeds Expectations rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Frameworks.

“We are proud year after year that ELA continues to demonstrate excellence. Our teachers and students all work hard to achieve these impressive results,” said ELA principal Annessa Hart.

Clayton Elementary for the first time received the Centers of Excellence Award. Only 15 schools statewide received the award this year. This award goes to schools where at least 75 percent of the school’s students are at-risk but demonstrate the highest rates of student growth over time as measured by the Colorado Growth Model.

“The Clayton community continues to focus on academic achievement and growth. This award is a reflection of our dedication and hard work to ensure that all students have equal opportunities for growth and learning,” said Clayton principal Jenny Buster.

“We are proud of the academic achievements of all of our schools this year,” said Superintendent Wendy Rubin. “It’s great that the Colorado Department of Education is recognizing these two schools in particular for their achievements.”
15 Tips to Raise a Responsible Child
father-son-outdoor.jpg
How do we raise our kids to take responsibility for their choices and their impact on the world?

Children want to feel like they matter to the world and their lives make a positive contribution. Here are some strategies to help:

  1. Raise your child with the expectation that we always clean up our own messes. If your child is too little to do this on their own, begin by helping them until they get the hang of it.
  2. Acknowledge when your child makes a positive contribution. All children contribute to the rest of us in some way, regularly. Notice when they do and acknowledge it.
  3. Remember that no child wants to do "chores." Your goal isn't getting the job done, it's shaping a child who will take pleasure in contributing and taking responsibility.
  4. Always let children "do it myself" and "help" even when it's more work for you.
  5. Rather than giving orders, try asking your child to do the thinking. Keep them focused so they can manage their own tasks.
