Message: When God Says "No."

Reveal My Fears

Then I heard the Lord say, "Whom shall I send? Who will be our messenger?"
I answered, "I will go! Send me!"
- Isaiah 6:8, GNT

As a pastor for several decades, I’ve seen firsthand the most intimate prayer requests of thousands of people. Each week, hundreds of needs flood our church, from prayer cards in our services to phone calls during the week or online requests through social media or our church app. So you won’t be surprised to know the most common phrase I hear each week is one I’m delighted to fulfill: “Pastor, will you please pray for . . .?”

I consider it a privilege, an honor, and a joyful responsibility to pause and lift up a need before the throne of God, asking him to have mercy, to move, to guide, to provide, to act, to do a miracle for people that I know and love. Each week someone asks that God would heal their loved one from cancer, help a neighbor find a job, or restore a hurting marriage. Students request prayer to get into the college of their choice, to help pay for that college, or to deal with the pain of their parents’ divorce. Some people pray for a spouse. Others ask for help to forgive a person who hurt them.

Even though the requests vary, people are asking God to do something for them or someone they love. God, help me. God, help someone I love. Lord, I need.... Father, would you please...?

God, do something for me.

Please hear me...we should definitely pray this way. We should always invite God’s presence, God’s power, God’s peace to intervene in our lives. We should ask God to do miracles on our behalf. We should lift up our loved ones and remind ourselves of how God can move in their lives. We should seek the Lord for all of our needs.

But we shouldn’t stop there.

What if instead of asking God to just do something for us, we prayed a dangerous, self-denying prayer of availability to our heavenly Father?

What if we prayed perhaps the most dangerous prayer of all?

“Send me, Lord. Use me.”

Isaiah prayed such a prayer of unreserved availability in the presence of God. The Old Testament prophet retells of his encounter with the Holy One when God asked, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” (Isa. 6:8a) And without knowing the details, without knowing when or where, Isaiah prayed this stunning, life-altering prayer: “Here I am. Send me!” (Isa. 6:8b).

Notice Isaiah didn’t ask for any details. He didn’t ask God where. Or when. Or what would happen. This is why this prayer can feel so dangerous. “God, send me. Use me. I’m not asking for details. I don’t need to know the benefits. Or if it will be easy. Or if I will enjoy it. Because of who you are—my God, my King, my Savior—I trust you. Because you are sovereign over the universe, I surrender my will to you, every part of me. Take my mind, my eyes, my mouth, my ears, my heart, my hands, and my feet and guide me toward your will. I trust you. God, my answer is yes. Now what’s the question?”

Imagine if you prayed this way. Are you sick of safe prayers? Are you tired of living for things that don’t matter? Do you despise half-hearted, lukewarm Christianity? Then pray the dangerous prayer.

Here I am, Lord.

Send me.

Prayer - Grasping The Heart Of God

Why is praying so difficult at times?

How do we pray to a God that seems so far away?

What does it mean when the Apostle Paul says to pray "without ceasing?"

We have so many questions when it comes to prayer. This series is all about helping people learn to pray the type of prayers that will move the heart of God. Over three weeks, we'll explain why some prayers are ineffective, what it really means to trust God with what we ask for, and how to pray for the miracles that require a God-sized faith.

To watch last Sunday's message:
Healing Prayers

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14, KJV

Four Conditions For Healing/Restoration:

1. Be humble.

Pray as though everything depended on God; act as though everything depended on you. – St. Ignatius

2. Ask God.

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. – James 1:5, NLT

3. Seek His face.

The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God. – Psalm 14:2, NKJV

4. Turn my attention towards God.

Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes. – Matthew 6:34, MSG

Study Guide:

1. Read James 1:17. We should open the day with gratitude. Share one thing you could thank God for every morning.

2. When you remember how good God really is, does that affect how often you pray?

3. Read Matthew 6:33. What are some of the “other things” you’re praying for? Do you believe it would help to put God’s kingdom first?

4. Read Matthew 6:13. What are some of the temptations you’re battling? Maybe take a minute to pray for God’s protection and provision.

5. How often do you ask for forgiveness? Can you remember a time when you carried guilt or resentment too long?

6. What is one encouraging prayer you can say tonight before going to sleep?

Pray: God, please help us learn more of what it means to pray without ceasing. Help us pray for everything we need in life, realizing that you are the great provider. Jesus, give us the strength we need to ask for forgiveness and give forgiveness each day. And please help us to always remember to put You and Your will first. Amen.
God is capable of meeting every need you have.

And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:19

Parent and Student GroupMe

We have a student and a parent GroupMe account to help keep everyone up to date on what's going on in student ministry. GroupMe is a group texting app that's a great forum for staying connected and asking questions. It can be muted, so you won't get notifications constantly. If you or your student would like to be added, just text or email Nathan at 706-464-7548 and nathan@theridgecolumbus.com.
Children's Ministry

May Theme - Peace

We have transitioned back to placing students on carpets by grade in the elementary area rather than by family and pre-arranged friends. We will combine two of our carpets for each group to provide more spacing, and we will limit the number of kids in each group. Kids will still need to wear masks at this time.

Hi, Parents!
This spring we're offering both in-person and online RidgeRunners experiences.

Infants through Toddlers and Pre-K through Elementary meet on opposite sides of the gym for the full 10:30 a.m. service. Check in at the hallway table just inside the Turner Auditorium doors.

Staff and volunteers will be wearing masks and sanitizing hands. Kids Pre-K and up must wear masks on their way to and from their carpets in the gym and while we are singing. They may remove their masks while on their carpets and not singing. If a child does not have a mask, we will provide them one at check-in.

RidgeRunners will post a video on YouTube. Join us for a game, worship video with dance motions, and a great lesson! You can also watch at any time throughout the week after the livestream.

We will be following the state of GA guidelines for camps during COVID-19. Those guidelines are updated twice per month and can be found on GA.gov under executive orders. If camp were to be held today, we would take the following steps. As guidelines are updated these steps may change, and we will update parents accordingly.

1. We will screen all campers and staff for signs of COVID-19 upon arrival and during the week. Screening will include temperature checks.
2. No one who has COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19 will be allowed to attend camp without a negative test and no symptoms present at least 48 hours before the start of camp.
2. Food servers will wear masks while serving kids in the cafeteria.
3. We will use the "pods" concept or groups of kids, so we limit the amount of contact kids have with others at camp.
4. Parents will be required to remain in their vehicle during drop-off. (We hope to be able to lift this requirement by the time camp gets here.)
5. We will have a designated quarantine area for campers who show symptoms. If any camper does show symptoms of COVID-19, we will contact you immediately and make arrangements for you to pick up your child. Campers who leave because of symptoms must show proof of a negative test to return.
6. We will maintain distancing between cabins and groups throughout camp and especially when inside.
7. We will practice frequent hand washing and sanitizing.
8. We will clean regularly including and especially bathrooms and the kitchen.
9. Camp visitation will be limited to those volunteers who are necessary for running camp.
