Greetings and welcome to the February 2022 issue of Dateline.
Welcome to another edition of Dateline! This month, we celebrate African American History Month. While we are still in the grips of the latest COVID-19 surge, I hope that the information in this newsletter will provide you with ways to recognize this important piece of American history.
In order to recognize African American History Month, there are resources curated for teachers to use in their classrooms, activities designed to lend a deeper appreciation of African American history and culture and CCCOE will host a lunchtime brown bag seminar on February 25.
As usual, this issue features additional teaching resources, as well as a number of available student grants, contests, and scholarships.
Please enjoy and share Dateline and the included opportunities with your fellow educators.
Sincerely,
Lynn Mackey
Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools

New Online Resources for Students
Thanks to a new partnership with the State Library and as part of California’s K-12 Online Resources Program, three new online resources are available to every school-aged student in the state. National Geographic Kids Virtual Library allows students to adventure in science, nature, culture, archaeology, and space. Gale In Context: Environmental Studies can broaden student understanding of environmental issues that affect people globally through topic overviews, journals, news, and multimedia content. Gale Interactive: Science allows students to manipulate 3D interactive models to visualize and understand biology, chemistry, earth, and space science concepts. Access these digital resources and many more at ccclib.org
Library Learning Tools
The Library has created several short videos designed to help students, teachers and caregivers learn how to use some of the most valuable online resources more easily. Learn more about and watch at https://ccclib.org/library-learning-tools/. Video tutorial topics include how to use the Catalog, how to get an eCard, Brainfuse, Explora, Learning Express, NoveList, OverDrive/Libby and Tumblebooks.
Seed Libraries
Seed libraries are now available at four library branches. While varied in their use they are places for community members to share and trade seeds that have been donated or harvested locally. This means that the plants that grow from these seeds will often do better than store bought seeds since they have acclimated to the local microclimates and soils. Visit the seed libraries at the Antioch, El Cerrito, Kensington and Pinole branches. You can browse and borrow and donate seeds.
Social Media Ambassadors
You can support public relations at the Library from the comfort of your home by volunteering as a Social Media Ambassador. You can help the Library extend its reach into the community and raise awareness of library collections, resources and programs at the same time. No application is required. Simply sign up to receive Social Media Ambassador emails once or twice a month. Each email will include information about library initiatives and topics. Ambassadors will be asked to post about the Library in their own words and to share stories about what they love about the Library – maybe an upcoming event, a recent blog post, a favorite branch or what they’re reading or watching. The Library is looking for ambassadors on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Nextdoor. Sign up at ccclib.org/ambassadors/
