Greetings and welcome to the October 2021 issue of Dateline.
I know the start of the school year has been both inspiring and challenging with COVID-19 affecting schools throughout the county. Hopefully, things are getting better on your campuses and in your classrooms. I am glad to see that the data is trending in a positive direction. COVID infections and hospitalizations are down, while vaccinations are up. It is my sincere hope that we can continue this trend and reduce the impact this pandemic is having on the students and communities we serve.
One of the challenges we are facing due to the pandemic is a serious shortage of substitute teachers. This shortage faces school districts throughout the county and state. If you know of anyone who meets the minimum requirements, please encourage them to apply. They can visit www.cocoschools.org/becomeasub for more information on becoming a substitute teacher.
October continues the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, but also recognizes Filipino American History Month. October is the month Filipino American labor leader Larry Itliong was born (October 25, 1913) and also marks the arrival of the first Filipinos who landed in what is now Morro Bay, California on October 18, 1587.
October is also LGBT History Month, which is meant to highlight and celebrate the history and achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
In this issue of Dateline, we list a number of resources and events taking place in honor of both Filipino History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. As always, there are a number of professional development activities that can help educators in the classroom and support students and communities. Most of these workshops are free and cover a variety of topics. In addition, you will find valuable resources for educators and students, such as available scholarships and the latest services offered by the county’s libraries.
Please enjoy this issue of Dateline and share it with your fellow educators.
In Partnership,
Lynn Mackey
Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools

Mount Diablo Centennial Celebration
|
Saturday, October 16, 2021
|
This year Mount Diablo State Park turns 100. To mark the occasion, California State Parks and its partners invite the public to attend a special event on Saturday, October 16. This birthday celebration takes place at the foot of the mountain at Cal State East Bay’s Concord Campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This will be a time for the community to celebrate the 100-year history of the park. The day will feature information and activities highlighting the natural and cultural treasures that have been preserved as well as the recreational and educational opportunities that abound in Mount Diablo State Park.
Activity booths will showcase the park’s fascinating wildlife, history, and ways to safely and responsibly enjoy the park. Discover the variety of creatures that call the park home as you meet live animals such as bats, snakes, and local birds of prey. Meet the volunteers and horses of our Mounted Assistance Unit who roam the trails on horseback, discover why the oldest rocks layers are on top of the mountain, and see how astronomers view the heavens from the mountain’s heights.
California State Parks, the Mount Diablo Interpretive Association, Save Mount Diablo and Cal State East Bay hope you will join us for this event to celebrate Mount Diablo State Park’s birthday, its many stories, and the community’s connection to this amazing place.

Perfectly Whelmed: Zoom Improv Class for Teens
|
|
Wednesday, October 6, 2021, 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm
|
|
“With improv, it’s a combination of listening and not trying to be funny…” Kristen Wiig
In this class, students will be introduced to basic concepts of comedy improv such as “yes and” (enthusiastically accepting what is offered by classmates), “group mind” (listening to each other and working as a team) and “space object work” (miming objects and environments). Using warm-up exercises and improv “structures”, students will be encouraged to trust their instincts, think on their feet and actively support each other (it is said that a good improviser is one who makes his or her teammates look good). They will also laugh a lot!
A note about Zoom: In online improv classes, we are not trying to imitate in-person classes. Rather, we are creating a new form of improv using the features of Zoom to our advantage. We look to film and television (and youtube) as our guide and use features such as the edges of the screen and close-ups to our advantage. Students are encouraged to “reach across the screen” with high fives and the hand-overs and cross-screen combat.
This program is part of TeenTober, a month of awesome programs for teens! Check out Mr Abe's Halloween Anime Drawing Workshop and Livermore Shakespeare Festival's Combat Workshop as well.

When we attend a musical theatre production, we go with certain ideas about what we're going to see and hear, but those notions took years to develop and are ever-changing. The majority of what we think about musical theatre comes from its Golden Age, spanning the years, people, and productions between Showboat and Fiddler on the Roof. In this presentation, Rob Seitelman will explain the building blocks that started the ball rolling for the American Musical, you will hear about some of the major works that established the genre, and ruminate on what makes the musical a quintessentially American art form.
A student of theatre, including musical theatre, for almost thirty years, Seitelman studied at Williams College (Williamstown, MA) and American Conservatory Theatre (ACT, San Francisco), where he earned his MFA in 2004. Seitelman has acted, directed, and written professionally, and has worked in various creative capacities with ACT, Berkeley Rep, and Berkeley Playhouse, among others. He co-founded a performing arts high school in Antioch Unified School District and has run theatre programs at high schools across the San Francisco Bay Area for the past ten years. His original musical based on Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost premiered at the New York Music Theatre Festival in 2008. Seitelman lives in Walnut Creek with his wife, two daughters, two dogs, and a cat, all of whom have Shakespearean names (except his wife).

Digital Citizenship Week
October 18-22, 2021
|
Why is learning Digital Citizenship Important?
It is important to model for students the ethical, legal, and safe use of online information and resources. It is also important to help students learn about how they can protect themselves and their personal information in online environments.
How can Digital Citizenship week help?
Digital Citizenship week strives to educate school faculty and parents on the issues that surround technology and prepare them to support and supervise their child’s use of technology. By providing classroom lessons/units the goal is to educate students as they navigate the digital realm and maximize what technology has to offer, while minimizing its negative impacts.
You can help students reflect on how their digital lives impact their social and emotional well-being.
Engage students with daily activities!
