State’s Mining Boom
Effect on our Water
The August 9th edition of Inside Climate News, reports that “nearly 80 percent of Arizona lacks any form of groundwater regulation, allowing big users like the copper mines, supplying the energy transition, to consume vast amounts of the scarce resource.”
This in-depth report details the state and federal mining laws that encourage mining interests to exploit natural resources under the guise of supplying the national energy transition.
Locals, tribes, and environmentalists are concerned about how these projects could wreak havoc on the state’s already depleted aquifers, which are the only source of water for many communities across Arizona.

As outlined in past Living Desert Aliance newsletters, the Copper World/Hudbay Inc. Santa Rita Mountains open pit mine project is a local example of this exploitation.
