Greetings!

We are pleased to introduce David Huang as one of the distinguished presenters at our 2025 Fall Gathering.

Transforming raw materials into a piece of art can feel like a superpower. David Huang can pinpoint that discovery, his radioactive spider bite, to a high school art class where he learned that one could create complex forms in metal with basic tools and elbow grease. With that epiphany moment, there was no going back. Already having decided he wanted to be an artist at the age of 11, he had now found his vocation in metalsmithing.

Formed through traditional angle raising techniques out of copper then embellished with chasing.The interior is 23k gold leaf and the rim is sterling silver.

Working his way through college taking courses piecemeal, David earned what would turn out to be a twelve-year degree, ultimately achieving a BFA magnum cum laude from Grand Valley State University in 2001. It was there that David discovered the “raising” process, the art of persuading a flat sheet of metal into becoming a hollow-form vessel with only the power of hammer, arm, and persistence, a process he found enthralling. To David, there is beauty in the simplicity of arm and “humble hammer” working as one to shape metal into any imaginable form.

When not traveling to present his work or teach classes, David spends his days hammering away in his earth-sheltered, Bag-End-like home studio that he built for himself on a beautiful homestead in Michigan. Like his journey through college, the story of this structure shared on his website shows David’s determination to form a life out of the often uncertain means of an artist. Just as the metal disc that has no interest in being a vessel without the relentless nudging of hammer and arm, the life of the artist, more often than not, has to be shaped around their craft with patient, painful effort.

The Plumier Fall Gathering will be held October 17-19 in Saltsburg, PA.

The program will begin Friday morning at 9 and conclude Sunday at noon.

Tickets for the weekend are $650. Plus-one tickets are $150. This will include lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday.
