Pauline Stephens Ivey Senior Life Center
The ribbon cutting for the Pauline Stephens Ivey Senior Life Center was held April 1, 2021. This facility was funded through a large donation from the Pauline Stephens Ivey Fund as well as a community block grant. Construction began in 2017 and was completed in December of 2020. Due to COVID, many of our seniors were not been able to visit the center since early last year. With the ribbon cutting and grand opening, the center welcomed seniors back to enjoy this beautiful new facility.

This new facility includes a movie room, game room, large commercial kitchen, nurse's office and a large multi-purpose room. The new center also has a dedicated dementia activity room and patio. Please call (706) 344-3700 for more information on the dementia program.
Dawson County Senior Services is located in Veterans Memorial Park at 201 Recreation Road, Dawsonville, GA 30534.

EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION
County Welcomes New Public Works Director

Dawson County Government welcomed Denise Farr as the county’s Public Works director on April 26.

Farr has more than 25 years of experience in the fields of engineering and project management. She has expertise in the development, implementation and maintenance of strategic capital project plans, a strong capacity in identifying and resolving project issues as well as being highly experienced in managing and tracking project expenses.

County Manager David Headley said, “I am very excited to work with Denise again. She was chosen from a number of extremely qualified candidates. Denise was selected for her proven track record of success and extensive engineering education and experience. There are very few female public works directors in Georgia and we look forward to Denise’s course of action in moving Dawson County ahead.”

Farr holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University. She also holds her State of Georgia Engineering in Training License, GSWCC Level 1A certification, Level II Certified Plan Reviewer, NPDES MS4 Compliance and Enforcement Certified Inspector and her LAP certification.

“I am honored to return to Dawson County and continue to help drive the county’s efforts in maintaining Dawson as a vibrant and welcoming community,” said Farr. “I look forward to working with staff and building on the many successes of the public works department in serving the citizens of Dawson County.”

Farr previously worked for Dawson County as the County Engineer from 2013 – 2015. She was the project engineer for all road and storm water construction projects, was responsible for RFP development for special projects, prepared labor and equipment forecasts as well as grant management for the trail enhancement project. Of note, Farr worked with FEMA/GEMA on recovery efforts of the 2014 winter snow storm, Pax.

Most recently Farr worked with Forsyth County as its Capital Improvements Project Manager and served as Project Engineer for Hall County.
Congratulations to Anne Martin
on her RETIREMENT!

Please join me in extending best wishes to Anne Martin, who is retiring after 23 years of service to Dawson County.

Anne began her public safety career in 1988 with Dawson County as a dispatcher. In 1990, Anne transferred to the Sheriff’s Office working as a jailer and was promoted to captain serving as the jail administrator. During this time, Anne was recognized by the Georgia Jail Association as corrections officer of the year for the State of Georgia. In 1996, Anne was recruited by Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and was appointed captain and jail administrator of the Forsyth County Jail. Anne worked for the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office from 1997 to 2006. While at Lumpkin, Anne served as a school resource officer and investigator specializing in crimes against children and reached the rank of lieutenant.

In 2006, Anne returned to the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office where she worked in the Sheriff’s Services Component until once again reaching a command role serving as a lieutenant in the Detention Center.

In 2017, Anne retired from law enforcement after nearly 30 years, but continued to serve in an administrative capacity.

Anne decided to retire this year and plans to spend as much time as possible with her grandchildren, doing arts and crafts with friends and spend time gardening which is one of her most favorite hobbies.

On behalf of Sheriff Jeff Johnson and the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our appreciation to Anne for her many years of service not only to Dawson County, but to the law enforcement profession. Although Anne will be greatly missed, we wish her well on her retirement!

Summertime Burning Restrictions
On May 1, a ban on outdoor burning began in 54 Georgia counties, primarily in the northern half of the state. Affected residents are asked to refrain from burning yard and land clearing debris during the hot summer months because smoke can negatively impact the state’s air quality by contributing to high ozone levels. These conditions have been linked to lung and heart disease in humans.

“The restrictions are required by the state Environmental Protection Division,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Protection Chief Frank Sorrells. “By limiting outdoor burning, fewer chemicals and particle pollutants are released into the air.” The burn ban is in effect until September 1 in the following counties: Banks, Barrow, Bartow, Bibb, Butts, Carroll, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, Columbia, Coweta, Crawford, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Floyd, Forsyth, Fulton, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Heard, Henry, Houston, Jackson, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Lumpkin, Madison, Meriwether, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Oconee, Paulding, Peach, Pickens, Pike, Polk, Putnam, Richmond, Rockdale, Spalding, Troup, Twiggs, Upson, Walker and Walton.

While campfires and barbecues are exempt the burn ban, the risk of wildfire in Georgia is always a concern. An increase in the number of wildfires has been recorded in March and April, with 860 wildfires burning almost 5,500 acres across the state. Escaped burning is the leading cause of wildfire in Georgia.

Residents in counties not included in the annual burn ban will continue to be required to secure a burn permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) before conducting any outside burning. Permits can be requested online at GaTrees.org or by calling the local office of the GFC.

“Georgia’s 25 million acres of forestland serve a giant air purifier,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Tim Lowrimore. “We can help them do their work by recognizing the burn ban and enjoying the many benefits Georgia’s trees and other natural resources give us in summer and all year long.”

For more information about the burn ban, the many benefits of trees and services of the Georgia Forestry Commission, visit GaTrees.org.
