Spring is here, but it is also the second month of April living through the pandemic. The past year has highlighted minorities at higher risk for adverse health outcomes.

Everyone who is homeless faces dangers while living on the streets. It is challenging to stay healthy if you do not have running water or bathroom facilities. Doctor appointments and medicine are nonexistent. However, Black and LatinX people who find themselves homeless often have underlying conditions and do not receive necessary care out of either fear or misinformation.
Pacific House sees first-hand how lack of access to health care affects racial and ethnic minority populations.
Minority Health Determines the Health of the Nation – The United States has become increasingly diverse in the last century. According to the 2010 U.S. Census, approximately 36 percent of the population belongs to a racial or ethnic minority group. Though health indicators such as life expectancy and infant mortality have improved for most Americans, some minorities experience a disproportionate burden of preventable disease, death, and disability compared with non-minorities.
Dr. Jessica Rosenberg from Optimus Health at our Emergency Shelter

Our partner Optimus Health Care visits the shelter twice a month to conduct health assessments in two treatment rooms. Nurses make a diagnosis and, if necessary, a referral for further attention. If medications are needed, the staff manages the process to ensure everyone receives their prescribed dosage. Transportation is also available to take guests to medical appointments.
Health and well-being is critical for everyone. There is pent-up demand to connect with others. Since the pandemic, minority health is front and center in the news, and the aim is to keep the spotlight on how to promote healthfulness in minority populations.
