Day 12: Building Together

One of my favorite memories at Shepherd of the Hills is serving on the Build Committee for our current sanctuary and office space. It was a dedicated team that worked together for three years — listening, dreaming, discussing, and discerning what this congregation truly needed in a new space.

The process began with many hours of meetings and focus groups, gathering input from church members about their hopes for the new building. As a committee, we spent time listening carefully to one another and seeking God's wisdom as we moved forward. We worked through selecting an architect, defining a realistic budget and finance options, and reviewing multiple drafts to see what our resources could support. Many wishes were considered along the way, and in the end, we came together around a shared vision — the building we worship in today.

Some of the details still make me smile. The architect originally envisioned floor-to-ceiling windows, but the committee did not want the view to include the parking lot. After much discussion and reflection, we arrived one evening to find framing in place below the planned windows. We were delighted to see that the architect had listened, and now the windows beautifully frame the mountain view you enjoy each Sunday.

As construction continued, the committee turned its attention to everything from lighting and seating to the communion table, baptismal area, flooring, organ placement, and paint colors. We sat in many chairs and pews before agreeing on the seats you use today — so we truly hope you are comfortable!

Even the design of the circular driveway came from thoughtful conversation shaped by prayerful perspective. At the time, I was doing a great deal of international travel. After returning home from a trip to the Philippines, I shared with the committee that how far people walk to get to church is truly a “first world” problem. I had seen people travel for hours in overcrowded vehicles just to attend worship. That experience helped ground our discussions in gratitude and humility as we considered how best to welcome people into this space — and it’s also why I love supporting church planting in the Philippines.

Serving on this committee was both challenging and deeply rewarding. Looking back, I’m grateful for the many hands, voices, and moments of discernment that shaped this place. It was a powerful reminder that when we listen well, seek God’s guidance together, and serve side by side, life truly is better connected.
