21-DAY EQUITY CHALLENGE
DAY 15
"Time and again, racist ideas have not been cooked up from the boiling pot of ignorance and hate. Time and again, powerful and brilliant men and women have produced racist ideas in order to justify the racist policies of their era, in order to redirect the blame for their era’s racial disparities away from those policies and onto Black people.”
Ibram X. Kendi
DEFINITION AND GENERAL CONCEPTS

RACIAL POLITICS OR RACE POLITICS is the use of race, as a human categorization or hierarchical identifier, in political discourse, campaigns, or within the societal and cultural climate created by such practice. The phenomenon can involve the activity of political actors exploiting the issue of race to forward an agenda.
The politics of race are shifting, and politicians are struggling to keep pace

Race has been a defining issue in American politics since before the country formally came into existence, a dividing line marked by generations of struggle and conflict. Today, the issue is back at the center of a national debate, this time amid shifting attitudes and heightened expectations that are demanding more than sympathetic rhetoric and safe steps from political leaders.

The complexity of race in New Mexico

No ethnic group is in the majority in New Mexico, and it makes for complex racial issues. Race in America isn't simply a black and white issue. Here in New Mexico, it's a black-brown issue, with tensions between the state's Hispanic community and African-Americans as well as between Hispanics and newer Mexican immigrants.
