Surprising Firefighters With a Spa Day
Day 37: For our first responders. First responders risk so much to keep our communities safe. Today we're inviting your family to think about how you can support Chicago's first responders. Check out this video about hardworking fire fighters being surprised with a self care day.

First responders are the first to jump into action when there is an emergency. Day or night Chicago's firefighters, EMTs, and police officers dedicate their lives to keeping our communities safe and healthy. As a community, it's important now more than ever to show our appreciation and care for our local heroes.
Let's Talk
After watching the video, Surprising Firefighters With a Spa Day, use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about the firefighters in the video? Why are their jobs so important?

  • First responders have physically and emotionally demanding jobs. Why is it important for communities to show care and appreciation for the work they do?

  • Think about a time someone went out of their way to help you. Why was it memorable to you? How did it make you feel?

  • Bonus! In the video, Michael talks about how it's important to take care of himself so that he can protect others. Take some time to practice your favorite form of self care today.

Make Cards for First Responders
We're inspired by Honeycomb volunteers! The Sill Family reached out and asked us to create a day dedicated to first responders. The Sill's are making care packages with letters for their local Chicago Police Station.

You can help too. Show care and appreciation for first responders across the city by making cards and drawings for Chicago's finest.

Why are you thankful for first responders? Show your gratitude for all that first responders do to keep our communities safe and healthy. Draw pictures, make art, and get creative! Need some inspiration for letter writing? Check out Honeycomb's Letter Writing Tips from our project Celebrate Local Heroes.

Send your pictures to and we'll distribute your pictures to local stations. If you have a friend or family member who is a first responder, let us know and we'll send you a link to the notes too!

Community Connection
Celebrate Local Heroes
First responders are hard at work keeping our communities safe and connected. To show your appreciation, make a care package as a family to drop off at your local fire or police station.

Try to limit unnecessary trips.  If you're out grocery shopping for your own family, consider adding some extra items to your cart to make a care basket for your local fire or police station. Need help locating a station? Check out this map of fire stations around the city.

´╗┐Curate your care package. Look for items that make you feel better when you're stressed out. Take inspiration from our video today! Snacks and self care items are the perfect way to say thank you. Fill your care package with the notes and pictures you made from the Do Something section above to let first responders know how much you appreciate them.

Please wear gloves, a mask, and maintain social distance while shopping and dropping off care packages. If you or a family member are not feeling well, please refrain from participating at this time.
Your participation is making headlines. Check out yesterday's segment on Honeycomb at Home on ABC 7 Chicago. Keep up the great work!
