Feeding America
Day 53: Nourish Neighbors.  DurIng these hard times, a record number of Chicagoans are living in poverty and struggling to pay for basic necessities like food, clothing, and housing. Today, we're inviting your family to think about how we can support our communities through food. Check out this video created by Feeding America about Priscilla, a veteran and mom experiencing food insecurity.

Feeding America has mobilized to provide food for communities across the country during the COVID19 crisis. While many are facing difficulties accessing food, as a city we have an opportunity to rise up together and support our neighbors in need.
Let's Talk
After watching Priscilla's story use the questions below to kick-start a great conversation with your family:

  • What stood out to you about Priscilla's story?

  • We all have to ask for help. When was the last time you asked for help? How did it feel to get support from the people around you?
  • Why is it important to show care for our community members? How can you care for your neighbors in need?

  • Bonus! Cook up comfort with your family! Need some inspiration? Check out these recipe videos from iCook After School.

Do Something
Community Lunch Box
Grab a lunch! We were inspired by some of our neighbors in Humboldt Park who put out coolers with free lunches for the taking. Today's project is to create your own Community Lunch Box. Decorate a plastic bin or cooler with eye-catching signs and pictures. Make sure to let people know they can take what they need!

Stock your Community Lunch Box with healthy items like water, fresh fruit, snacks, and sandwiches. Leave your box where people will find it easily (like an intersection or a bus stop).
Cuddle up with new merch! We're selling limited-edition loungewear to raise vital funds for our programs. Over 40 local partners currently rely on our trustworthy volunteers and unique resources to bolster their work. That's why we're laying the foundation now so we can mobilize our network for the challenges ahead. Shop now!
Community Connection
Jesse Brown VA Hospital
Fight veteran hunger. Our partners at Jesse Brown VA Hospital are in need of your support. Hunger in the veteran community is one of the big concerns the hospital is facing at this time. They need your help!

Give what you can. If you're out grocery shopping for your own family, consider picking up some extra items to donate. Jesse Brown is in need of microwavable meals, chili and pastas with pop tops, fruit cups, granola bars and other non-perishable ready to eat meals and snacks.

Please call volunteer services at 312-569-6109 a day in advance of donating so that staff can schedule a no contact curbside drop off with you.
