Day 6
It’s Day 6 of #30DaysOfLearning, and we're on a roll!  OKC Past President Chuck Fax discusses why the Avodah service--you know, the part about the animal sacrifices--is his fave. Be prepared to get a little choked up, because it comes with a good dose of nostalgia, too.

Up next: The Past Presidents are at it again! IPP Barbara Libbin is rolling up with an important message about physical and spiritual fuel, and how we sometimes need to make better choices for our bodies and our long-term health.

Is that roasting meat we smell? The ever-popular cookbook author, Kosher Baker Paula Shoyer, is showing us how to do brisket right! Join us for a Zoom cooking demo that includes babka baking on Sept 7. Want to get your hands on some tasty meat? KOL Foods is offering a 10% discount on meat orders and OKC gets a share of the revenue. Order before Sept 11th for delivery to OKC on the 15th.

Want to do the new work of avodah? The plight of the homeless and hungry is always before us – and the High Holidays provide an opportune time for us to try to address that. Through Operation Isaiah, OKC is collecting items of non-perishable food in collection boxes outside the front entrance during the month of September. Donations will benefit the Capital Kosher Food Pantry and the N Street Village.
Let’s discover our connection points to one another! We will ask you to share fun facts about yourself, offer personal reflections, and engage in interesting conversation points. For each of these thirty days, we will introduce one new topic a day. Today’s topic:

Setting aside the whole sacrifice thing… the Jewish value of tza’ar ba’alei chayim (showing compassion to animals) is an important one. Check out how some kids are helping shelter dogs by reading to them and then explore these six other ways you can show kindness to animals.

(Psst… hey parents! Looking to adopt a pandemic pet? Adopt from a shelter or rescue organization and save an animal’s life.)

Want to be part of the fun? Send videos and content related to the High Holy Days and watch our community get even closer… a little social distance can’t keep OKC members apart!
