Day 9: Remembering the Kyrie

A Favorite Tradition that has Special Meaning for Me:

There are moments in worship that reach beyond words — moments that connect us not only to God, but also to the faith that has shaped us over a lifetime.

For Sue Boyle, one of those moments is the Kyrie.

Sue shares that she loves the Kyrie because it brings her back to the church she grew up in. Each time it is sung, it carries her back to earlier days of worship — to familiar melodies, sacred spaces, and the steady presence of God that formed her faith from the very beginning.

The Kyrie’s simple prayer — “Lord, have mercy” — has been sung by generations of believers. In its repetition, it becomes more than a hymn; it becomes a bridge between past and present. For Sue, it recalls the roots of her faith. For all of us, it reminds us that we come before God just as we are, trusting in Christ’s mercy and grace.

When we sing the Kyrie together at Shepherd of the Hills, we join our voices not only with one another, but with the countless faithful who have sung this prayer before us — in childhood churches, lifelong communities, and sacred moments across time.

A Prayer for Today:

Lord, have mercy.

Christ, have mercy.

Guide us as we worship you — rooted in tradition, open to your grace, and thankful for the faith that has been handed down to us.
Amen.
