| | Building Up the Next Generation of Cowboys
| National Day of the Cowboy celebrates cowboys and cowgirls as symbols of the American West. After the Civil War, American ranchers built on the skill and tradition of the Mexican vaqueros to develop a cowboy culture of respect, loyalty, and hard work. Today, these values are passed on to the next generation. In the Free Rein pastures, we use cowboy culture to empower youth to overcome challenges, such as gang violence, drugs, and unsupportive home environments. The cowboy culture lives on in their commitment to respect, loyalty, and hard work.

| In May 2026, Free Rein Foundation rescued Cowboy, a friendly dun-colored American Paint Horse. Cowboy needed rescuing because he was seized by animal control in a widespread animal neglect case. Once he arrived in our pastures, our first priority was getting some weight on him. Now that he is looking healthier, we are slowly introducing him to pasture. He is still figuring out the herd dynamics, but is very excited to have freedom and friends. We are very pleased with Cowboy’s progress settling into his new home!
