DayBreak Adult Care:

Family Caregiver Programs and Activities

DayBreak Adult Care offers a wide range of services and activities designed to support family caregivers in their daily lives. Through both virtual and in-person support groups, as well as weekly comfort calls, DayBreak addresses caregiving stressors by providing practical, emotional, and resource-based support while fostering peer-to-peer learning among caregivers. In addition, caregiver-centered training is integrated into the support groups, and standalone training sessions are offered to enhance caregiving skills. These training sessions are facilitated by DayBreak staff, along with community partners such as UCSF and Kaiser Permanente.

DayBreak also engages caregivers in hands-on activities such as preparing nutritious meals in a commercial kitchen and creating advance planning documents, which are finalized with the assistance of a notary public. To promote fall prevention, DayBreak offers online exercise classes led by a staff physical therapist to help caregivers enhance strength and stability. Furthermore, DayBreak partners with community organizations to provide assistive technology and home modifications, including the assessment, ordering, and installation of durable medical equipment to prevent falls and injuries that caregivers may encounter while performing their duties.

In its commitment to community outreach, DayBreak actively participates in resource fairs, publishes a caregiver-focused newsletter, hosts bi-monthly webinars, and shares educational content via social media, all aimed at advancing caregiver education on a range of relevant topics.

Additionally, DayBreak is nearing completion of a free, digital guidebook for any organization or individuals wanting to start their own memory cafe but don’t know where to start or how to proceed. The Memory Care Café pilot program focuses on building and nurturing caregiver communities, education, support, and engagement. The pilot program is currently collaborating with two faith-based organizations in Alameda County, which identified a need for caregiver support and education within their communities. In-person programming includes caregiver micro-respite, support groups, resource and educational forums, and activities that provide both physical and cognitive engagement for caregivers and their loved ones experiencing memory loss.
