41 Years & Still On Mission!

2024 marks the 41st year of Daybreak’s operations in the Midlands of South Carolina. This coming May will mark three years since I was asked to assume the role of Executive Director by the Daybreak Board of Directors. For the previous six years, I had served as a member of the Board, the last five of those as the Board Chair. So, for over 9 years, it has been my privilege to serve in varying capacities within this wonderful ministry.

When I first joined the Board, Daybreak was housed in a very “humble” location on Hampton Street. It was a serviceable location, but it had its limitations. Then a generous donor with an expanded vision for the ministry found a building that had great strategic potential, and that donor bought the building for Daybreak! A minor and modest upfit was performed, and in the fall of 2016, Daybreak took occupancy. It is that location from which we serve our clients today. Members of the Daybreak team – staff, board members, and volunteers – have come and gone, but the mission has remained the same: we are here to share the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with all who might be facing unexpected or difficult pregnancies. You are receiving this newsletter because you have joined with us in this effort, and we are so grateful for you.

In that vein of thought, we have a request of you. Our annual banquet – Daybreak’s principal fundraising activity for the year – will be May 16th. It will be held at the beautiful Pastides Alumni Center of the University of South Carolina, and our keynote speaker for the evening is Dr. Albert Mohler Jr.! For many, Dr. Mohler is a well-known name. He serves as the President of Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and he is the host of a daily podcast called “The Briefing”, where he tackles many of the toughest social issues of our day from the vantage point of a Christian worldview. He is also one of the leading and most articulate voices for the support of preborn life in our world. That we would have a speaker of Dr. Mohler’s caliber is no small blessing, so we want as many folks as possible to attend.

To secure a venue like the USC Alumni Center is no small investment, but we wanted a special venue for our donors. At the same time, however, we don’t want to price attendance out of the reach of any who would like to attend, so we want to place a bold challenge before our donor community… Would you consider sponsoring a table so that others might be able to attend the event without any financial obligation beyond that which they might make as a gift to Daybreak? Your willingness to “purchase a table” would allow you to invite friends and associates who might be then freed up to give more generously to the work of Daybreak. Plus, having all the tables sold in advance of the event would free Daybreak from concerns about the cost of the event.

We have made every effort to keep the price of tables within a reasonable range, and we believe we have. Ten-person tables will be $600, and eight-person tables will be $500. This is the first time we have been able to offer ten-person seating, but the price of the eight-person table is exactly what it was last year.

We do hope you will give careful consideration to being a table sponsor, and we look forward to seeing you on the evening of May 16!

"My husband, Randy, and I have been married for 31 years. We lived in Virginia before moving back to South Carolina in 2017. Due to my health issues, we don’t have children, but enjoy spoiling our fur baby, Darci. We never felt God’s calling to adopt, but God blessed us with opportunities to help and mentor young people. We are also blessed with four nephews with whom we spend a great deal of time. We love to travel and meet people from different cultures."

"As a first generation American growing up in a strict Serbian household, I always knew that my family and upbringing were very special and unique. Completely immersed into the culture, I was accustomed to traditional home cooked meals, Serbian music, and participating in the various Orthodox church functions. My brother and I were raised in a household where respect, a strong work ethic, and education were highly valued and expected above all else."

Daybreak Client Story

"Recently, I met with a young woman that represents so many of our clients. She had spent eight years in an abusive relationship. During that relationship, she had a son, and shortly after he was born, she found out that she was pregnant again. Desperate to get out of that situation and the relationship at that point, she chose abortion. She did manage to escape from the abusive relationship after that, but now she was back at Daybreak, pregnant again, with another man’s baby."

February 2024 In Review

At Daybreak, we are honored to get to work alongside some amazing ministries within the Columbia area. A Moment of Hope is certainly one of these ministries. On Thursday, February 1st Daybreak staff had the privilege of attending A Moment of Hope’s annual banquet at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. It was an evening of good food and fellowship, with an inspiring message from Scott Hamilton—American figure skater and Olympic gold medalist. We joined together to hear about the continued efforts of A Moment of Hope and beautiful testimonies of how God continues to rescue lives from the evil of abortion.

On February 15th Daybreak hosted an Abortion Education Lunch & Learn. Approximately 15 ladies from various professions and walks of faith joined together at Daybreak to learn more about the services that Daybreak provides to women and men experiencing unexpected pregnancies, and to learn about the realities of abortion in a post-Roe v. Wade world.
