Text sent from Mark Smith '86 to Dr. Dan McMahon '76*:
I have a cool One DeMatha encounter. It involves me ('86) and Marc Wolcoff ('21). I was flying to BWI from Jacksonville (FL) to visit my mom. Marc was returning from seeing his girlfriend off at college for her master's. We were flying SW Airlines where you pick your own seats. I was later in boarding so took the first available middle seat. Marc was sitting next to me in the window seat. After introductions and learning he grew up in MD, I said you probably heard of my HS. I said DeMatha and he said, no way, me too. He is the same age as my youngest and we graduated 35 years apart. We spent the flight sharing our DM experiences and how they shaped who we are today. We enjoyed comparing DM from the 80s versus the 2020s.
I left teaching, and this coming week will mark my one-year anniversary as the safety manager at a chemical plant in FL. Marc starts the Anne Arundel County Police Academy in September. After a long career in public service in the fire service we also talked about that calling and how to prepare for a successful career. Anyway, the values and principles that shape young men is very much alive and well.
God bless and stay well.
