Postscript from the Office of Advancement:

I met with Al Edwards '54 about 10 years ago. Al was a part of a group supporting Catholic education in Frederick, Md. During our meeting, Al expressed concerns whether many Catholic schools would still be around by 2025 and that only the wealthiest institutions would survive. Al has since passed on. But I'm happy to report that DeMatha is still going strong and we look forward to celebrating our 80th year starting in the fall.

DeMatha remains strong because of the support it receives from our community.

On Tuesday, we will hold our annual Giving Day, a key component in our fundraising efforts. Once again, we are asking for your support. Our goal is $100,000, and in the past our community has helped us to not only reach the goal but surpass it.

We are asking the community to support "Greatest Need," which funds everything we do! It is a direct line item in our budget, and the amount we raise factors heavily into just how successful a year we have.

So many of you have generously answered our calls in the past. A good number of you have already given this year. But even if you have contributed, we ask that you consider, at the very least, a cursory donation on Tuesday.

If you give, think of someone like Neal Murphy, who has unselfishly given 41 years of his life to DeMatha, both teaching and coaching. As you know, Neal is retiring at the end of the academic year.

We know full well DeMatha is not perfect and never will be. But it is a place that certainly does its best to live up to its mission of educating Faith-filled Gentlemen and Scholars.

In 1996, Jim Turk asked if I could come up with some lyrics for a school alma mater. On a cold January evening, as I was about to leave DeMatha at 11 p.m. (after having worked bingo - lol), I stood there looking at the dome light of the chapel. On my drive home, I composed these words in my head:

DeMatha stands tall in all that is true

Steeped in tradition of a cross red and blue

Built on a promise that challenges 'never'

DeMatha Today! DeMatha Forever!

Thanks again for your support! Let's see to it that DeMatha is around, not only 10 years from now, but many, many years to come.

God Bless.
