The Patterson Foundation’s Work in DeSoto & More

Bridge a Life: Walking Alongside Families in Desoto County

By Denise Grimes

Imagine a family in DeSoto County, struggling to make ends meet while caring for children who've experienced trauma. A foster mom reaches out to Bridge a Life, knowing she can count on us for support. Through our CarePortal ministry, local churches like North Hillsborough Baptist and First Baptist of Fort Ogden step in to provide her family with the tangible items they need—everything from furniture to school supplies. But it doesn't stop there. These churches also offer the wraparound support she needs to thrive.

At the Safe Children Coalition office, Bridge a Life's Stew Crew fills freezers with frozen meals, ensuring that when a family is in crisis, they don't have to worry about where their next meal will come from. As our volunteer base grows, we hope to extend this service to even more families in DeSoto County.

We also recognize the hard work of caseworkers who tirelessly support our community's children. That's why we host Caseworker Appreciation Days, celebrating these dedicated individuals who make such a difference in the lives of children and families.

Our trauma-informed trainings, offered virtually and soon in person, empower families and community partners with the tools to support children affected by trauma. We're also excited to expand programs like Parents' Night Out and Hammer Time to DeSoto County, where volunteers can make a real impact.

We're committed to deepening our reach in DeSoto, and we need your help. Whether you're a foster, kinship, or adoptive family looking for support, a volunteer eager to make a difference, or a church wanting to partner with us, we'd love to connect. Please contact Casey at casey@bridgealife.com to learn more.

Harnessing the Power of Partnership to Strengthen Our Entire Region by Phillip P. Lanham, President and CEO of Gulf Coast Community Foundation

Featured In SRQ DAILY SATURDAY PERSPECTIVES EDITION SATURDAY AUG 16, 2025

Thriving communities don’t happen by accident; they are built through vision, investment, and collaboration. At Gulf Coast Community Foundation, our mission extends across a region as varied as it is vibrant. While Sarasota County often shines in the spotlight, our neighbors in DeSoto and Charlotte Counties face unique challenges that deserve comparable attention. These communities, along with Lakewood Ranch, Longboat Key, and Boca Grande, form a broad and interconnected region, one where the well-being of each part strengthens the whole.

Communities like DeSoto and Charlotte counties are rich with resilience, deep connections, and a strong sense of identity. Local leaders, nonprofits, and residents have been working for years to address challenges such as access to healthcare, food security, and workforce development. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with leaders in both counties to amplify their efforts and create lasting impact. If we are truly committed to building a stronger region, we must ensure these areas are not only included in our vision but are also at the forefront of our strategic investments.

Last year, we launched an ambitious three-year strategic plan with a bold objective: to grow and leverage our philanthropic resources to maximize the most impactful opportunities for our region. This includes a focus on DeSoto and Charlotte counties, ensuring their unique needs and opportunities are part of our shared vision. One way we are achieving this is by aligning resources with donors and partners, combining funding, expertise, and relationships to deliver greater impact where it’s needed most. Reflecting on the DeSoto Funders Collaborative Meeting by Ashley Coone, TPF Consultant

On Wednesday, August 13, 2025, partners of the DeSoto Funders Collaborative gathered at The Patterson Foundation in Sarasota for a lively and uplifting conversation centered on collaboration, progress, and shared aspirations for DeSoto County. Bringing together six philanthropic partners — Community Foundation of Sarasota County, Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, William G. and Marie Selby Foundation, Gulf Coast Community Foundation, United Way Suncoast, and The Patterson Foundation— the Collaborative works to align resources, exchange knowledge, and co-create impact in DeSoto County.

This was the first time reconvening since December 2024, and the energy in the room reflected just how far the Collaborative has come since its launch in June 2023. Learn more here about the efforts underway to strengthen DeSoto County.

DeSoto County Community Champions Spotlight: Fernando Zepeda Jr.

We are proud to celebrate Coach Fernando Zepeda Jr. as the very first DeSoto County Community Champion chosen directly by the community. Building on the tradition of honoring outstanding individuals selected by the DeSoto Digest team in the past, this recognition is unique because Coach Zepeda was nominated and elevated by community members themselves.

One person who nominated him shared, "Coach Fernando, for the last three years, was a three-time consecutive district champion, regional champion, final four states for soccer, three-time coach of the year, and recently shaved his head in support of one of his softball players who was diagnosed with cancer. Has gone above and beyond for children. True asset to our community."

Coach Fernando has lived in DeSoto County for 35 years. He's entering his 7th season as the boys' varsity soccer coach and his 2nd season as assistant varsity softball coach.

His favorite thing about DeSoto County is always seeing familiar faces around town. Although DeSoto County is growing, he appreciates that there is still a down-home feeling and an increasing support in youth sports from the community. His aspirations for DeSoto County center on helping mold young adults into respectful, productive members of the community. Learn more about him here!

Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry in DeSoto: A Pop-Up Neighbor Through Laundry event was held in DeSoto County late July, which was a joyful celebration of community, connection, and care. Thanks to the generosity of The Patterson Foundation, 87 families were able to clean 932 loads of laundry—free of charge. The strength of our collaboration in DeSoto County was on full display:

-- Hailey Tallman of First 1,000 Days Suncoast provided vital information and diapers to families, with enthusiastic assistance from 14-year-old Sophia Szeremy, a dedicated Sarasota Memorial Hospital volunteer.

-- Alma Ovalle, representing United Way Suncoast, shared the many supports available locally.

-- Clara Alvarez brought the message of connectivity through Digital Access for All,

-- Karissa Roosa and Nelle Miller led a team from All Faiths Food Bank in distributing apples, potatoes, and corn from their fresh produce truck.

-- We were also uplifted by the presence and helping hands of Chelsea Palmer from Team Arcadia; Beth Carsten, Administrator for the City of Arcadia; Irene Cerna, South Florida State College's DeSoto Campus Coordinator, and her son Pedro; Arcadia resident Laura Nico and her daughter Michelle Nico-Solis; and 16-year-old volunteer Kennedy Cole. My Paper Route in Arcadia and DeSoto County by Sherry Oehler, consultant with TPF

On one day every month, I hit the road with a stack of DeSoto Digest monthly newsletters in the back seat of my car in both English and Spanish, making stops all across Arcadia and throughout DeSoto County. I’ve come to affectionately call it my paper route—not just because I’m delivering papers (DeSoto Digest Newsletters), but because it feels like I’m making lifelong connections with friends and family in my neighborhood.

A year ago, TPF newsletters were greeted with a wondering look, but now, they are greeted with excitement and open arms because they are filled with knowledge, resources, announcements, community features, and guest articles from residents. Continue reading about Sherry’s monthly route in DeSoto and how she engages with kind-hearted folks from DeSoto County who always greet her with a welcoming smile. Learn more about Sherry’s paper route and the people she meets along the way here!

Links2Success’s “Science at the Sea” summer STEM Camp by Ashley Coone

Students from DeSoto County had an exciting summer of discovery and hands-on learning through Links2Success’s free STEM camp opportunities: Science at the Sea and Intro to Roblox Game Design.

During Science at the Sea, hosted by Minorities in Shark Sciences, students explored the natural wonders of Florida’s coastal environment. They studied local ecosystems, learned how to assess water quality using scientific tools, and identified marine life through seine netting. Campers also had the chance to kayak through mangroves—an unforgettable experience that combined science and adventure.

In the Intro to Roblox Game Design camp, hosted by State College of Florida, students dove into the world of coding and digital creativity. They learned how to build their own 3D games using Roblox Studio, gaining valuable skills in logic, game mechanics, and collaborative problem-solving.

These enriching camps were made possible thanks to the generous support of Florida Power & Light and the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation.

Desoto County’s First Hospital-Based Wellness Market by All Faiths Food Bank

In late July, All Faiths Food Bank and DeSoto Memorial Hospital officially opened DeSoto County’s first hospital-based Wellness Market — a 24/7 pantry providing patients with access to fresh, medically-tailored food as part of their discharge plan.

Nurses and administrative staff will personally select and distribute healthy foods to patients who have been identified as food insecure. The patients will then be connected with All Faiths for an opportunity to receive additional food and benefits assistance.

This partnership is designed to reduce readmissions and improve health outcomes by addressing food insecurity as a critical health issue — especially in rural communities facing reduced federal and state nutrition support amid recent government funding cuts.

Thank you to DeSoto Memorial Hospital and the Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation for making this possible!

Walking the New Civic Path Together: Lessons from the book circle

One Kind Act Can Spark a Chain Reaction by Butch Phelps, Muscle Therapist,

The Muscle Repair Shop

In a world where politics, religion, ethnicity, culture, and even gender seem to divide us, it’s easy to forget one simple truth—we’re all human beings. Too often, people are judged, rejected, or even harmed for nothing more than their beliefs, the color of their skin, or their gender. This initiative matters because it reminds us to pause, sit down, and talk with one another—not to convince, but to understand. We don’t have to agree to connect. What we do need is to recognize that someone else’s worldview doesn’t make them our enemy. Our recent gathering made that clear. While most of us shared similar perspectives, the real breakthrough came in realizing how to take this mindset beyond the room—to our families, friends, and even strangers. When we choose tolerance over judgment, doors open. Read Butch’s full blog here!
