Democratization, Authoritarianism, and Radicalization:
Exploring the Connections
CSID's 17th Annual Conference
The Middle East and what is broadly described as the "Islamic world" appears to be dissolving into political chaos and religious extremism. The prospects for democratization that seemed so bright during the Arab Spring appear to be fading. This is certainly the impression derived from the world media.
The reality however is far more complex and the intertwining of political authoritarianism, processes of democratization, and the forces of radicalization are rarely explored in a rigorous and scholarly manner. Muslim-majority societies after all cover a broad swath of the world which is internally culturally, ethnically and often religiously diverse; they are furthermore implicated in global politics over which they often have little control.
The seventeenth annual conference of the Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID) will therefore be devoted to exploring the complexities of this highly important topic today in the context of these diverse Muslim-majority societies. Paper proposals are invited from prospective participants on the following four broad topics. Possible topics are not restricted to the ones that follow but proposals must establish their relevance in general to the conference theme.
- Islam and Democracy after the Arab Spring
- Iranian Nuclear Agreement: Impact on Democratization and Radicalization in the Region.
- Implications for Policy-making

Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by
January 22, 2016 and final papers must be submitted by
March 15, 2016.
Selected speakers must cover their own travel and accommodations to participate in the conference, and pay the conference registration fee by March 15, 2016. Travel grants of $500 are available for selected speakers and panelists coming from outside North America.
