Modern Authentication for Azure / 365

Support for basic authentication will end by October 1st, 2022, giving administrators who haven't switched to a newer authentication method little time to prepare for a smooth transition.

Basic authentication support in Azure/365 ends on October 1st, which makes it imperative for organizations that rely on the platform to prepare for this Microsoft modern authentication deadline.

What is Microsoft Modern Authentication?

Microsoft modern authentication uses the OAuth2 protocol and security tokens administrators use to approve or revoke access to resources. The modern authentication method eliminates some risks associated with exchanging a username and password every time a user needs to authenticate.

Why Microsoft is forcing users to switch to Modern Authentication?

The answer is enhanced security. Microsoft and the US Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency highlight several reasons for moving to Modern Auth:

  • More than 99% of password-spray attacks use legacy authentication protocols
  • More than 97% of credential-stuffing attacks use legacy authentication
  • Azure AD accounts in organizations that have disabled legacy authentication experience 67% fewer compromises than those where legacy authentication is enabled
