A Message from Convention Secretary, the Rev. Annalise Pasalo: Upcoming Bishop Election

Dear Friends in Christ,

I’m writing to you in my role as Secretary of Convention. As you have likely heard, on May 16, 2026, we will gather for a Special Convention to elect the sixth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaiʻi. This is both a prayerful process of discernment and an official decision for our diocese.

Delegates from each congregation—elected at their annual meetings in January—will gather to pray and vote for who they believe God is calling to be our next Bishop. Voting will happen in rounds until one person receives enough support from both clergy and lay delegates. While only elected delegates can vote, everyone is welcome to witness this important moment in the life of our diocese virtually. There will be a livestream of the election.

This process belongs to the whole diocese, not just those voting. I ask you to keep the delegates, the candidates, and the work of the Holy Spirit in your prayers. I also encourage you to take time to review the candidates’ materials —resumés, essays, and videos—especially if you will be voting.

Beginning next week, there will be opportunities to meet the candidates at the Ke Aloha Kākou Meet & Greets taking place across the diocese. The deadline to register to attend (both in person and online) is tomorrow, April 16. Please register HERE or click on the button shown. You are welcome to attend more than one event; if you wish to register for a second in-person gathering, please email Alofa Carpenter at acarpenter@episcopalhawaii.org. All events will also be livestreamed, with time set aside for a formal Q&A with questions from those in attendance both in-person and virtually.

Please note that a Code of Conduct/Rules document has been posted in the Ke Aloha Kākou Meet & Greets section of the Bishop Search and Transition webpage HERE. (It is located below the Agenda dropdown link, or click HERE to view the document now.)

Additional details about the May 16 Special Convention, including schedule and livestream access, can be found on the diocesan website HERE. Following the election, the result will enter the wider Church consent process before the Bishop-elect is ordained and consecrated.

I invite all of us to approach this season with prayer, grace, and openness, trusting that God is at work among us as we discern our next Bishop.

Faithfully,

Annalise Pasalo+
