BIM – Building Design Technology and It’s Effects on Project Leaders
(Virtual Workshop; 1LU)
|
|
Many architects today are familiar with the concept of BIM and the impact related technologies have had on the way they practice. However, BIM is part of a much larger topic of building design technologies that extends to construction as well as owner operations. Evaluating what level of technology can bring value to a project and understanding how to properly incorporate the use of that technology is what architects need to know as project leaders.
Through a review of industry standards and case studies, this course will educate architects on some of the ways that building technology is having an impact for contractors and owners. Lastly, this course will discuss some of the processes and contractual documents that are critical to successfully incorporating such technologies into their projects.

Re-Occupancy Assessment Tool
|
|
Architects and allied professionals are in a unique position to coordinate a range of mitigation strategies that, in aggregate, reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of COVID-19 within non-health care settings. The goal of this assessment tool is to promote best practices that protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public while creating opportunities for businesses, schools, restaurants, and other non-essential facilities to provide services.
This document provides architects, private clients, and civic leaders a framework of strategies for reoccupying buildings and businesses that are in the process of transitioning from being fully closed to fully open; including:
- baseline parameters for re-occupancy
- architectural and engineering strategies for site and site arrival, building envelope, fixtures and furnishings, plumbing and HVAC
- administrative policies and procedures to reduce the spread of pathogens and support physical distancing
- policies and procedures related to PPE

There is limited guidance on how to modify the built environment to reduce risk of exposure to COVID-19, and to avoid recurring cycles of outbreak. AIA convened a virtual charrette with architects and experts in public health, engineering, and facilities management
to develop guidance for building management professionals, design professionals, and federal, state, county, and local governments. Input from the charrette led to a new
Risk Management Plan for Buildings worksheet, enhanced the
Re-occupancy Assessment Tool, and expanded the
ArchMap. In addition,
the CDC just released sweeping new guidelines on the safest way to reopen office buildings. Need talking points to frame your conversations with clients?
AIA's new Five Steps to Thrive will help you best position your value. Thanks to everyone who submitted a video or message to celebrate architecture's class of 2020!

AIA's COVID-19 Business Task Force New Content Series
|
|
On May 28, the House of Representatives passed the bipartisan
Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act of 2020 by a vote of 417–1, which would
extend the covered period (during which eligible expenses may be forgiven) from 8 weeks to 24 weeks. It would also change the percentage of the loan that must go to payroll expenses to qualify for loan forgiveness from 75% to 60%. The Senate debated a similar proposal last week and will return from recess this week. Earlier, the Small Business Administration released the "much-awaited" PPP loan forgiveness application and instructions.
This summary by Hinckley Allen provides answers to critical questions, which will change if the Paycheck Protection Program Flexibility Act of 2020 becomes law.
