NOVEMBER 2020
Bulldog Families,

As we close in on the final weeks of a truly unique semester, it is important that we all take a few moments to pause, rest and reflect on what we have to be thankful for. Understandably, most are thankful that 2020 is about to come to a close and with the recent news of an impending vaccine, it already signifies brighter times ahead in 2021. As a campus, we are thankful for the tremendous efforts that our entire community has made to remain positive in the face of adversity, enhanced our technological acumen on an almost daily basis, welcomed 300+ new Bulldogs into our College family and special congratulations to the 40+ student who will earn their degree in December! Below are upcoming deadlines and information for the end of the fall semester, the holidays and preparation for the spring semester. Wishing all of our Bulldogs and their families a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Flu Shots and Health Forms

ALL SPRING SEMESTER RESIDENTIAL AND COMMUTER STUDENTS must submit confirmation of the Flu Vaccine by December 31, 2020

Beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, influenza vaccine will be required for all full-time undergraduate and graduate students under 30 years of age and all full- and part-time health science students at post-secondary institutions. The current legislation does not apply to students who will remain in an entirely virtual format for the spring semester.

Influenza vaccine is always important to receive to reduce the risk of getting sick with influenza, reduce the severity of disease if one does get sick (including the risk of hospitalization) due to influenza, as well as preventing the spread of influenza to others. During the COVID-19 pandemic, influenza vaccine will be especially critical to reduce the overall impact of respiratory illness on the population, protect vulnerable populations from severe illness, and decrease the overall burden on the healthcare system.

Any documentation that is provided by the practitioner who administered the influenza immunization is acceptable. You must upload proof of the vaccination to the student Health Portal section labeled '2020-2021 Influenza Vaccine Record'.

Please use the following link Health Portal Instructional Video to view the process for uploading all health forms to the portal.

For additional information about the flu vaccine and FAQ's please visit mass.gov.

We have just finished the initial registration period for Spring 2021 courses. Please encourage your student to reach out to their Success and Career Advisor if they have questions, still need to register, or want to make any changes to their spring schedule!

Accelerated winter courses are available! Winter Intersession runs from January 4 through January 22 and the course schedule can be found here Winter Intersession Course Schedule. They can be a great way to catch up…or get ahead! Students should connect with their Success and Career Advisor for more information and to register!

Time to think about holiday gifts! This is a great time to look for some proper interview attire for your graduating student.

Office of Residence Life

The Office of Residence Life has enjoyed the opportunity to connect with students virtually through a variety of programming including First Year Fridays, the community spaces, open “virtual” office hours, and more this semester! Offering over 40 programs, approximately 20 of those programs specifically for First Year Students, we have seen over 300 students in attendance. These programs are created for students to meet new people, connect and socialize with friends, enhance their organizational and interpersonal skills, and create a respectful, inclusive community. Remind your student to attend Residence Life virtual programs throughout December by visiting the Campus Events section on Today@Dean or follow @DeanCollegeCampuslife on Instagram and Facebook.

As we look forward to next semester, we are dedicated to preparing a safe, inclusive, and fun Residential Living Experience for all students planning to return to campus. We will continue First Year Fridays led by Community Advisors and the First Year Area Coordinator, in addition to a wide-variety of weekly programming opportunities in each residence hall from the Residence Life staff and the Resident Student Association.

Reminder: All Spring 2021 housing assignments will be released on December 14th via MyHousing. Students are reminded to check Today@Dean and their Dean emails for more information as we get closer to move-in day.

Morton Family Learning Center- Spring Academic Coaching

Registration for Spring Academic Coaching has begun. For those not familiar, Academic Coaches provide individualized, one-on-one learning support in the areas of time management, organization, note-taking, study strategies, writing and test preparation. Academic Coaches build on students’ strengths while addressing areas of challenge.

Academic Coaching will occur in person as well as remotely for the Spring semester. Students will indicate their preference on the registration form. All Academic Coaches have been trained on Microsoft TEAMS, MyWCOnline, MyCourses and various other online learning platforms. Academic Coaches will support students as they navigate these online delivery systems. By way of one-on-one meetings with their Academic Coaches, whether in person or online, students will be able to review specific strategies to better prepare, engage, and succeed in their courses.

Students can register at any time for Academic Coaching by going to www.dean.edu/academiccoachingregistration. The link is also available on Today@Dean under Essential Links on the student side. The cost of academic coaching remains $850 per semester for one hour each week; and $850 for each additional hour per week, per semester. Students may enroll in up to 5 hours per week. For students currently receiving Academic Coaching, we encourage you to re-register to continue to take advantage of all that Academic Coaching offers.

If you have any questions about Academic Coaching for the Spring, please email learning@DEAN.edu. We would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

The Morton Family Learning Center wishes all our families a joyous holiday season!

From the Office of Counseling Services

Even in a pandemic, many of us feel there is not enough time in the day to do the things we need to do. The business of work, academics, chores, projects etc. can get in the way, if we allow it to.

As we continue to balance the uncertainty about the future with hope for better days ahead, students must remember that 'you are in control of how you spend your time'. Make it a priority to find time, make time and take time to refocus and appreciate the little things (and big things) which are most important to you.

Make the time to exercise, make a meal, solve a problem, have a long overdue conversation, reach out to an old friend, give your undivided attention.

Take the time-to smile (even under your mask), sleep an extra 15 minutes, listen without distraction, say hello to a stranger, ask someone how they are, point out the positives, give a compliment.

Find the time- put your feet up, watch a movie, unplug, go for a ride.

Enjoy the holiday season! We look forward to seeing the students return for the spring!
