Families,
It is never lost on me that the final newsletter of each academic year coincides with the Boston Marathon. This year also marks the tenth anniversary of the tragic marathon bombing that took five innocent lives and changed life as they know it for many more. Some important life lessons can be learned from those who train for the marathon, and within those teachings, we often view similarities in the lives of college students.
The twenty-six mile run is not a sprint, but an opportunity for everyone to run at their own pace. Runners may take time to find their stride and will likely face obstacles along the way that force them to dig deep and discover traits within themselves they didn't know existed. The growth of a college student is found in the new challenges they explore, the grit and resiliency when the outcome is not as expected, or powering through those late nights to complete a paper or study for an exam.
Just as runners may struggle or cramp up at certain checkpoints and find a second wind at others, students also experience highs and lows that they learn from, dust themselves off, and continue to persevere. Many that experienced the trauma of 2013 and were left with emotional and physical scars have displayed great courage and remind us never to take a moment for granted. In the darkness of that day, we also witnessed some of the greatest moments of humanity which began the slow process of healing as a city and a community.
As runners cross through the finish line on Boylston Street, mostly on adrenaline, they think about their 'why' which helped them endure many days of training and achieve an accomplishment that many never would have dreamed of even a few years ago. For all of our Bulldogs, that finish line can exist at the close of each year as they think back on how much they have developed and matured as college students and people. For our graduates, the finish line is a ceremony unlike any other industry to mark the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and desire.
Just as we will witness runners raise their arms as they cross the tape, followed closely by hugs to the throngs who have come to cheer them on, we consistently remind our students that they are never on this journey alone and should always remember to thank those that made it possible to reach this apex...you!
Congratulations Class of 2023, and we wish you great success in the future! Know that the traits, knowledge, and confidence you have gained along with the tenacity of Bulldog spirit have prepared you well for the next step in your journey.
Wishing all of our Bulldog families a terrific summer ahead.
Best,
Dave Drucker, M. Ed.

Spring Semester Hall Closing Information
Resident returning students are required to depart three hours after the completion of their last exam (this policy is extremely beneficial to those still completing exams). If a student needs an extension due to travel, please refer them to Chapman House to speak with Residence Life. The residence halls will officially close at 6:00pm on Thursday, May 4th (graduating resident students participating in Commencement- see below).
Any exceptions to this policy will be determined by the Office of Residence Life. Students must complete the checkout procedure as discussed in their residence hall meetings. All rooms must be cleaned, and keys properly returned to avoid a room and/or key replacement charge. In the coming weeks, Residence Life will hold hall meetings to communicate all closing expectations to students.
Graduating resident students participating in commencement on Saturday, May 6th have the option to depart after commencement; Residence Life staff will be available until 3pm to assist in the checkout process. In addition, we will offer graduates the opportunity to stay until Sunday, May 7th, and check out by 10am. Students will be required to complete an online form to stay on campus Saturday evening; this will be sent to graduates’ student emails.
