Families,
Welcome to our newest Bulldogs, and the first of many congratulations to those who have begun their final semester at Dean College. There are so many transitions that take place for students throughout their college years and we strive to support and build their confidence every day.
As a passionate sports fan, it was evident watching the recent NFL playoff games, that players were clearly fighting through injuries sustained throughout the season and the pressure of the moment, leaving it all on the field. Although they are professionals at the top of their craft, they learn to recover from in-game mistakes as well as plays and calls that don't go their way, continuing to persevere in search of victory. This is an excellent message for college students: Continue to push yourself and simply get better each day. You will undoubtedly run into challenges where things don't go as expected and/or attempt a task several times before reaching the desired outcome. None of this involves perfection. Instead, the idea emerges that with prolonged effort 'practice makes permanent'. This is a statement that I remember from a coach during my formative years as a soccer player. Many of the lessons can be reinforced by mentors here on campus (faculty, staff, administrators) and of course, you! Never forget that you are a huge part of their success.
Turning the page to February we look forward to events marking Black History Month, highlighted by our student-run 6th annual Black Excellence Showcase. We recently celebrated the Lunar New Year, Year of the Rabbit, with terrific cuisine in the Smith Dining Center. Simultaneously we continue to search for answers for the tragic events in California and the death of Tyree Nichols. Through discussion and moments of reflection, we will provide support to our community and search for answers and guide a path forward toward peace and respect for all human life.
Please see below for campus updates, highlights, and programming. There are office contacts below if you have any specific questions. Wishing you a wonderful upcoming month.
Best,
Dave Drucker, M. Ed.
Associate Vice President, Student Life & Dean of Students

Boomer Chat is Back!
At the beginning of every semester, our chatbot Boomer re-introduces himself to students via text. Boomer checks in on students every few weeks to gauge how they are adjusting to the semester and if they need any additional support or resources. Students can also text Boomer questions 24/7, for example, "what time does the dining center close?" and Boomer will text back the answer!
Please encourage your students to respond and engage with Boomer. If you are receiving the texts instead of your student, please email kefitzgerald@dean.edu with your student's name and correct phone number.

Residence Life- Summer Storage Solution
Each year as the Spring semester begins to wind down, the Dean College Office of Residence Life receives numerous requests to store belongings during the summer from students wishing to avoid bringing them home, only to bring them back again a few months later. While we do not have space on campus to accommodate these requests, we do have a solution.
We have a new exclusive partnership with StorageSquad.com which will pick up, store and re-deliver your student's items that they will not need until next semester. This is a very easy way to make move-out less stressful for you and your student. More information will be made available in the next newsletter and to your student's Dean email.
If you have additional questions, please reach out to the

Amazing Opportunities through Study Away
A great way for your student to create an amazing resume is to participate in Dean College’s Study Away Program. Studies have shown that studying away has a positive impact on developing top-notch 21st-century career skills and expands career possibilities not only immediately after graduation but throughout one’s career. In fact, a recent Dean participant stated that studying in London for a semester was the reason she was hired for a competitive summer internship in her field. And, it’s fun!
Dean College’s Study Away Program includes three options to meet a variety of interests and needs: (1) Dean College courses that include a short, 7-10-day trip abroad or in the U.S., (2) Study away experiential programs in the United States, including The National Outdoor Leadership School, The Washington Center, or the Disney College Program, and (3) Study abroad for a semester or a year through Assumption University in Rome, Bard College Berlin, Regent’s University London, Semester at Sea, or in many other countries throughout the world through one of our affiliated partners: AIFS, API, Arcadia University, and SIT.
Students generally study away anytime between 2nd semester of their sophomore year through to 1st semester of their senior year and need to have a 3.000 cumulative GPA. Students first complete the internal pre-approval application, and then they complete the external study away application. The internal application deadline to study away for summer 2023 or fall 2023 is Wednesday, February 15th.
Interested students should plan to attend the upcoming information session about the program, on Wednesday, January 25th at 5 pm in the Golder Room (2nd floor, Rooney Student Center). Melissa Read, Director of the Study Away Program, also holds weekly drop-in office hours in Dean Hall, Room 203: Mondays, 2-3:15 pm; and Thursdays, 1-3 pm.
For more information, students can speak with their Success and Career Advisor and with Melissa Read, Director of the Study Away Program at mread@dean.edu.
