September/ October 2024

Dean Bulldogs and Families,

As we move into the second month of the fall semester, we hope that your student has begun to find their stride with academic and social pursuits. Student organizations are a great way to make connections when students have additional time in their schedule. Students can visit the Student Activities and Leadership Development office on the lower level of the Student Center Atrium for more information.

Pictured on the right is the first-year class in our classic letter 'D' formation prior to the matriculation ceremony and below, the traditional 'pat of Boomer'. Students pat Boomer immediately following the matriculation ceremony and will do it once more as they walk toward Commencement Exercises at graduation. Also below are photos from the 'Welcome Back Cookout' that took place on the iconic Awpie Way.

We are looking forward to welcoming many of you to campus for Homecoming: for Alumni and Families on October 25- 26 (link to the schedule below). It's always a terrific weekend to reconnect with your student as well as faculty and staff in Bulldog Nation.

There is a lot of terrific information below to assist your student from afar and connecting with important resources on campus. Wishing all of our families a great start to the fall.

Best,

Dave Drucker, M. Ed.

Associate Vice President, Student Life & Dean of Students

Join us for Homecoming: For Alumni and Families, October 25 - 26. There will be days of activities for all of the Dean Community, including alumni, parents, and friends. Click to see the schedule of events.

This weekend will be a time to celebrate Dean College - for families to get an inside look at life at Dean, for alumni to reminisce about their experiences, share their alma mater with their families, and make new memories! Unless noted, all activities are open to everyone, of all ages.

Supporting Student Academic Success

We have just completed week four of the semester! This is a common time that your student may be seeking additional academic support in their courses. Here's some information we have shared with your students:

Success & Career Advisors have access to a dashboard that provides updated information about students' performance in courses by pulling data directly from Canvas pages. Students also have access to their own "live" grades and assignments in each course on the Canvas page. Advisors may reach out to students based on their academic performance on their dashboard to provide additional resources and support.

We have also encouraged students to:

•      Engage with their faculty to discuss your specific grades, academic progress, and areas to improve.

•      Utilize the academic support available to all students in the Morton Family Learning Center, and the Theodore and Cynthia Berenson Center for Writing, Mathematics and Presentation Excellence.

•      Explore the Academic Coaching (AC) program, a fee-based service offered through the Morton Family Learning Center, which provides academic skill development through professional support in writing, reading, math, time management and study skills.

We are here to support their success!

New Faces:

Brooke Maker has joined us from Salve Regina University, where she advised and taught first-year students in a pilot model. She will bring wonderful experience to our team as she works with first-year and sophomore students in the School of Business, as well as first-year students in Strive4Success.

Karen Bailey brings experience from several institutions in career advising and event planning. Her strong career background will help set a foundation for our first-year and sophomore students in the School of Liberal Arts and School of Business.

Rachael Conboy has been an academic coach at Dean and she will bring that knowledge and skillset to our team. Her personal perspective of her career journey in the sciences that led her here, as well as her school counseling background, will help our first-year undecided students, and our first-year and sophomore students in the School of Liberal Arts.

Francesca Panorese comes to us from Brandeis University with a background blended in community engagement and education. Her experience and approach will be put to great use with juniors and seniors in the School of Liberal Arts.

Familiar Faces:

Shane Benjamin will continue his leadership as the Associate Director, working primarily with juniors and seniors in the School of Business and School of Liberal Arts. Isa Elsasser (first-year students and sophomores) and Liza Smith (juniors and seniors) will continue to work with our students primarily in the Schools of Performing Arts and School of Liberal Arts.

We look forward to supporting your students this year!

-Kristin Fitzgerald, Director of Success & Career Advising

Career Planning and Internships

New this semester! Career Planning & Internships has rolled out a new DCA supplemental workshop series this month to help students achieve their career-related goals! Every Monday from 12 pm-1 pm & 4 pm-5 pm, workshops are held to work on DCA topics such as interviewing, resume writing, life design, and so much more! Encourage your student to attend a session this semester. All sessions are held in the Campanella Board Room, which can be found across from the dining center.

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership Development has been having tons of fun with students at our events! You can always follow along with our Instagram, @deancollegecampuslife, to see what students have been up to like our recent Dean-themed bingo, movie nights, and magic show!

Dean's 40 student-run clubs and organizations have been off to a great start as well, recruiting new members and holding initial meetings and events. We're excited to see where this year takes them!
