Bulldog Families,
Nothing like a welcome back blizzard to kick off a new semester! Certainly helpful that it was a weekend event and only served as a true disruption for one day. We all weathered the storm (pun intended) and even those not from this region braved the elements like hearty New Englanders. With the groundhog making his appearance this week, this Dean of Students is hopeful that spring is right around the corner.
As we are just a month into 2022, it's a great time for students to think about a new idea or initiative that they will try or get involved in on campus. The college journey can move quickly and we want our students to embrace the full experience be it a leadership position (New Student Orientation Leader advertisement below), work-study or maybe simply joining a student organization. Whether you are a senior and you view yourself as Tom Brady heading off into the sunset or you are in your first year, like the upstart Cincinnati Bengals trying to win your NFL title, it is always a great time to try something new. These are all great ways to enhance your social network and strengthen your toolkit.
We are excited this month to celebrate Black History Month, highlighted by the Annual Black Excellence Showcase and the Chinese New Year (Year of the Tiger) with a special dinner in the Smith Dining Center.
The COVID-19 Omicron strain is showing a national downward trend and that is certainly a positive development. We have also seen this in our weekly testing positivity rate. The campus continues to do a wonderful job respecting our COVID policies, and we will update our community with any changes that occur in the coming weeks.
Wishing you all a wonderful start to 2022! Go Bulldogs!

Associate Vice President, Student Life & Dean of Students

Dean Alumnus Andrae Murphy ’07 Chosen to Lead Football Program
Dean College Director of Athletics George Martin has announced the hiring of former Bulldogs football student-athlete and 2007 alumnus Andrae Murphy as the next head coach of the football team.
"It's an honor to be named the head coach of Dean College," said Murphy. "I'd like to thank President Rooney and George Martin for giving me such an incredible opportunity to return home and lead this remarkable group of student-athletes. I owe so much to Dean College, and I am eternally grateful to serve the Dean Community in this capacity."
Murphy earned honorable mention NJCAA All-American and First Team All-Northeast Junior College honors as a defensive back at Dean from 2005-07. He earned an associate degree in Communications in 2007. Murphy takes over a Bulldogs program that went 2-8 overall and 1-5 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) in 2021. The team is two years removed from an ECFC championship in 2019 and will look to make a run at next year's title with a large group of returning skill position players and a talented crop of newcomers.
"I am pleased to welcome back Andrae to the Dean College Community as our next Football Head Coach," said Martin. "Coach Murphy's passion for Dean, our student-athletes, and vision for the future of the program elevated him to the top of a very deep and talented pool of applicants. I am excited to bring Coach Murphy back home to Dean, and I look forward to seeing the impact of his leadership on our student-athletes, our Athletic Department, and the entire campus community."
"I am thrilled that we are welcoming a Dean Bulldog to lead our NCAA Division III Football Program," said Dean College President Paula M. Rooney Ed.D. "Dre knows what it means to be a Bulldog and to live The Dean Difference. We are welcoming home an alumnus that we are very proud of to lead our student-athletes to new academic and athletic success."

This Spring - Refuse to Play the Stress Game
Sometimes we wear our busyness like a badge of honor, it’s important to remember that stress diminishes your performance level and ability to cope with the regular ups and downs of life. Try some of these quick 5-minute relaxation strategies and refuse to play the stress game!
-
Deep breathing: Take slow, deep breaths through your nose – filling up your whole chest – and exhale slowly through your mouth. Try to make your exhale longer than your inhale.
-
Progressive muscle relaxation: Starting with your toes and working your way up to your head, slowly tighten ... hold ... and then relax your muscle groups (feet, legs, buttocks, abdomen, shoulders, arms, hands, face). This type of body scan exercise is also great for helping you fall asleep.
-
Mini-meditation: Even two-five minutes of meditation can calm your mind and help you feel more focused and relaxed.
-
Visualization: Mentally rehearse a task you want to master. Imagine yourself acing the task (taking an exam, having an important conversation). Now, focus on how your success feels (excited, relieved, satisfied, smart). Re-visit this feeling often.
-
Grounding exercise: While breathing deeply and slowly, connect with your five senses by naming 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
-
Thoughts as clouds: Sit comfortably with your eyes closed. Observe your thoughts as though they were clouds in the sky passing overhead, coming, and going involuntarily.
-
Change of scenery: Get up and take a short walk. Or take the longer route to class to take in a few extra minutes of nature.
-
Let it out: Laugh with a friend. Do 20 jumping jacks. Put on your favorite song and dance.
