Business Day at Pre-COP Meeting Highlights Economic Opportunities
The incoming Polish Presidency organized a Business Day at the pre-COP meeting, which was attended by Ministers from 35 countries, government delegations, private sector representatives and other stakeholders.

Business day highlighted the wealth of economic opportunities when acting on climate change, and the urgent need for a just transition towards a low carbon society that both protects the climate and jobs.

The focus of the pre-COP Business Day was to achieve climate neutrality notably through accelerated action in the areas of energy, electromobility and urbanization – all highly interlinked or overlapping topics.

Ministerial Pre-COP Meeting Concluded in Krakow, Poland
Against the backdrop of the recent publication of the IPCC special report Global Warming of 1.5 °C , preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24) to be held in Katowice in December were officially kicked off this week at the so called "Pre-COP" ministerial meeting in Krakow, Poland (22-24 October). The aim of the meeting organized by the incoming Polish Presidency was to lay the foundation for a successful outcome at COP24.

Our Executive Secretary Patricia Espinosa strongly urged progress. She highlighted the fact that according to the International Energy Agency, emissions from the energy sector were on the rise and asked participants "to take one message back home: that people of the world want us to achieve results at COP24 and that we intend to reach those goals".

In a positive and constructive atmosphere, 35 Ministers discussed the key issues of the implementation guidelines of the Paris Agreement. They engaged and increased their understanding of positions and possible bridging proposals to ensure that the Paris Agreement can be fully implemented.

Climate Champions Already At Full Speed To Prepare for COP24
As we reach the end of 2018 and approach the next UN Climate Conference to be held in Katowice, the High-Level Climate Champions are drawing from a full year of hard work to gear up towards COP24.

With the outcomes of the regional Climate Weeks (Africa, Asia-pacific, Latin-America and the Caribbean), the New York Climate Week and the Global Climate Action Summit held recently in San Francisco, and with the interim outcomes of the Talanoa Dialogue in-depth discussion that took place in Bonn in May and the several others held in support of the Talanoa process, Minister Inia Seruiatu (Fiji) and Special Envoy Tomasz Chruszczow (Poland) are in full preparation of the Marrakech Partnership work for the conference.

They have prepared a schedule of events to be held at COP24 which is available on the Marrakech Partnership's website. More details about the events will be provided in due course.

On behalf of the Champions, we would like to remind you that the deadline for submitting your input to the Talanoa Dialogue is 29 October 2018. See how to submit your input here . A synthesis report that aims to capture key messages from this year-long process will be issued before COP 24.

In addition, the Champions have been encouraged by the success of the Yearbook of Climate Action 2017 published last year and have worked on its second edition: stay tuned for information on the publication of the Yearbook of Global Climate Action 2018!

Finally, for participants in COP 24, please also consult the newly published overview schedule to prepare for the sessions. It should be considered indicative and will be updated with new information as it becomes available. This schedule can be found on the Conference main page of the UN Climate Change website along with additional practical information.
