Marrakech Partnership Resolutely Engages Regional Stakeholders in Singapore
Acting as the curtain-raiser to the Asia-Pacific Climate Week, the High-Level Climate Champions convened an in-depth meeting of the Marrakech Partnership to forge a policy dialogue with local actors.

The one-day workshop went through the Marrakech Partnership activity plans for the year, key milestones of the process where they can engage in and held deep-dive discussions per sector (Energy, Industry, Finance, Land Use, Oceans and Water) on opportunities and challenges surrounding the Asia-Pacific region in scaling up climate action.

The Asia Pacific Climate Week Galvanized Regional Climate Action
The Asian Pacific Climate Week, hosted last week on Singapore’s Sentosa Island, featured a spectrum of climate solutions and important events to galvanize climate action, including the hallmark Asia Pacific Carbon Forum, a High-Level event on Financial Markets, and, by way of conclusion, a local edition of the Talanoa Dialogue on Green Financing.

Actors seized on the opportunity of the Climate Week to make a number of bold new announcements that, ahead of September’s Global Climate Action Summit and the UN Climate Change Conference COP24 in Katowice, Poland demonstrate the global resolve to take ambition to the next level this year.

Who are the New Co-Chairs of the Global Climate Action Summit?
The Global Climate Action Summit announced Xie Zhenhua, Special Representative for Climate Change Affairs of China, as its fifth Co-Chair. Minister Xie has for many years represented the Chinese government with distinction at both the national and international level including as China’s chief negotiator for the landmark 2015 Climate Change Agreement.

Additionally, on 1 August, the Global Climate Action Summit announced Jayathma Wickramanayake, the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, as its sixth co-chair. As a Co-Chair of the Global Climate Action Summit, Ms. Wickramanayake will mobilize young people from all walks of life to step up and lead on climate change. She will also help to deliver the call to action from the Summit to the UN General Assembly and beyond.

Coming up: Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2018
The Latin America and Caribbean Climate Week 2018 (20–23 August, Montevideo, Uruguay) will gather Governments, private sector and other non-state stakeholders for a key international summit to drive climate action forward across the region.

The event will cover climate-friendly development, innovation on transports, waste-to-energy policy, circular economy, carbon pricing, low emission infrastructure and other areas (see  full programme) just three weeks ahead of both the  Global Climate Action Summit  in California and the  New York Climate Week. These will benefit from the demonstrated support for stepping-up climate action from actors across the Latin America & Caribbean region.

Our UN Climate Change Executive Secretary, Patricia Espinosa, will participate in the event, alongside the High-Level Climate Champions, Minister Inia Seruiratu from Fiji and Mr. Tomasz Chruszczow, Special Envoy for Climate Change from Poland.

J oin us for the Marrakech Partnership Meeting in Montevideo, in conjonction to the LACCW!
On the opening day of the LACCW in Montevideo, the High-Level Climate Champions will convene stakeholders from the region for a new round of discussions about global climate action activities and milestones for 2018 and beyond.

This meeting will take the form of a special session aiming to explore and examine ways to engage regional actors in the inter-governmental process. The Marrakech Partnership will host three additional events thereafter, also at LACCW 2018:

  • On  21 August:
  • Event on adaptation measures that help advance NDC commitments in Latin America (Lead: Fundación Avina. Support: FAO, ICC, ICLEI, Regional Center on Climate Change and Decision Making, The Nile Basin Discourse, WBCSD);
