Greetings!
Your loyal founder Katerina here - Rose is on vacation this week, so I have the pleasure of writing to you myself!
If you've been with us for a while, you know that ENGin isn't like other nonprofits. Being a part of ENGin isn't like flying in a plane, where the pilot's in charge and the passengers sit back, relax, and eat their peanuts. It's like a crew team rowing a boat - ENGin can only move forward if we all row together.
I am so lucky to be surrounded by many passionate volunteers who have stepped up to row with me, Rose, and the rest of our team. In our volunteer spotlight below, you can learn about one of them, Alisa, who spearheaded her own writing program at ENGin.
But I know we have many more dedicated volunteers helping ENGin reach its mission. This is why I am excited to launch our new Volunteer Service Awards to honor those volunteers who have made an exceptional commitment to ENGin. Please see more details below.
And one final note: September is always a busy month for us, with applications from Ukraine pouring in as students get back to school. We encourage you to continue spreading the word about ENGin with your friends, family, and community. Here is a flyer you can use.
Thank you!!
Katerina

ENGin Volunteer Launches Writing Clubs for Students
|
|
This summer, our volunteer Alisa Gulyansky spearheaded the ENGin Stories and Voices Program, an innovative project to help our ENGin students improve their writing skills. Nearly 50 students worked in groups with 5 volunteer instructors to complete a 3-week curriculum covering different types of writing, from personal narratives to poetry to persuasive essays.
We're so grateful for Alisa's dedication and leadership in all aspects of this initiative, from designing the project to securing a grant from her school to make it possible to directly working with participating students!
We're also very impressed with the wonderful pieces of writing produced by our students
We are publishing the best pieces in our member newsletter, but today we'd like to share a preview of one of our favorites here (see below).

From the Heart of Zaporizhzhia
I was born in Zaporizhzhia, the cradle of Ukrainian Cossackdom, the land of incredible landscapes and the city of marvelous people. I could have never imagined that my homeland would become world famous not because of the traits described above, but due to it now being one of the most dangerous and notorious frontline regions of Ukraine.
...My best friend [left] Ukraine on the 1st of March, 2022. By this time, the major part of my family and acquaintances had already abandoned their homes and migrated to other countries. Day after day I would wake up in the morning under the deafening howl of sirens and break into despairing tears.
I started to hate the place where I live. I would, without hesitation, call it a hellhole in front of my peers, while chatting with them online. I considered their life unbelievably eventful and cheerful, compared to mine. At that time, the military actions in my region were severe; in full swing, you may say.
You can find the rest of this story along with other writing and photography from ENGin students in our member newsletter. To get started as an ENGin member, simply make a monthly donation of any size here.
