Great Giveaway Sweepstakes Winners

December 2023 Grand Prize Winner

Richard Clarke, a.k.a. "Half Bad", won this month's Grand Prize. He picked the new-to-the-prize-list, Platinum Medal-awarded, Louisiana Grills Founders Legacy 800 Pellet Cooker, MSRP $1,899.

"Well I’ll be d*****! This is fantastic! Very excited, can’t say 'I never win anything' ANYMORE! Thank you...humbled," he said.

Congrats, Rick!

The Founders Legacy series by Louisiana Grills is the 20-year-old brand’s homage to the company’s founder and pellet cooker visionary, Dan Thiessen. While the heavy-duty construction and beautiful stainless steel design immediately set it apart, the true differentiator is its SearTech technology that allows for both direct and indirect cooking. Most pellet smokers aren’t able to cook at high enough heat for searing, but the Founders Series nails it! Available in both the 800 and the larger 1200 models.

December 2023 Second Prize Winner

Jeff McCollian, a.k.a "CheeseBaron", won Second Prize this month. He selected the Platinum Medal-awarded Char-Griller Grand Champ Offset Smoker, MSRP $599.

"Winning Second Prize is a great Christmas present. It will make a great addition to my grilling arsenal.

"I really enjoy this website and appreciate all the knowledge to gain on the site and in the forum," he said.

We always advise our readers to stay away from cheap offset smokers and jump straight to high-quality, heavy metal models. But Char-Griller’s Grand Champ provides an intermediate alternative; not cheap as the $200 tin can models, but far more affordable than classic quarter-inch steel competition smokers. See why we give this smoker our Platinum Medal at the link below.

"I won! It's hard to believe, I have never won anything. I look forward to receiving the third prize goodies. Thank you very much," h said.

Napoleon Phantom P500, by Max Good

Phantom is a relatively new line, based on Napoleon's popular Prestige Series gas grills, with some important upgrades and an unusual, attractive black matte finish that embodies its name. When Phantom appeared, it immediately created buzz. Did Phantom live up to our expectations? Yes and no.

ThermoPro TempSpike Plus, by Bill McGrath

The ThermoPro TempSpike Plus is an upgraded version of the TempSpike that we reviewed here. The latest version has a shorter, reduced-diameter probe that should make it easier to use on smaller cuts of meat. It uses the same app as its predecessor.

Meater 2 Plus, by Bill McGrath

The Meater 2 Plus is the latest wireless food thermometer from Apption Labs, makers of the original Meater. It features five separate temperature sensors along the probe's length to mitigate errors caused by less-than-perfect placement in the food.

There is another sensor in the handle of the probe that measures the ambient temperature in the cooker. The probe communicates with the charger/range booster which, in turn, communicates with your phone.

Spider Grills' Venom Thermostatic Kettle Controller,

by Meathead

In the past 10 years, there have been several thermostats for controlling charcoal grills introduced. They are especially good for managing temperature for cooks that take hours.

They all work on the same basic concept: Regulating the amount of air (oxygen) that reaches the coals. Restricting oxygen cools the cooker, while adding oxygen allows it to heat up.

The best I have tried is the Venom from Spider Grills for use on the hugely popular 22-inch Weber Kettle, Performer, and Summit Charcoal. Venom can also be made compatible with the 26-inch Kettle with optional Conversion Clips.

ChefsTemp Quad XPro by Bill McGrath

The ChefsTemp Quad XPro is a four-channel food thermometer with a transmitter and receiver that the manufacturer claims can stay in touch up to 500 feet under ideal conditions.

The unit comes with four probes: three L-shaped food probes and one straight probe with a grill clip to measure the cooker's internal temperature.

In Case You Missed It

As noted in last month's edition, in early November we lost "BigJim" Maivald, our webmaster. He died suddenly of a heart attack at age 67.

Jim first started working with me approximately 15 years ago and ever since has been instrumental in building and maintaining the AmazingRibs.com website, fighting off hackers, and managing our tech team.

Jim was also a friend. We got together every month or so to discuss business, politics, Jim's latest sailing adventure, and life in general while enjoying a fine spirit of Jim's choice. We will miss him dearly and our thoughts are with his wife Susan, daughter Maggie, and son Christian as they navigate their grief.

You can read more about Jim or offer your condolences here.
