Our Thanksgiving Jubilee:

150 Years of Mission

This year’s Thanksgiving Harvest is unlike any other—an extraordinary celebration of 150 years of God’s amazing faithfulness.

From the personal graces in our lives to the historic milestones of our parish, we lift our hearts in gratitude for every moment of this remarkable journey.

As we rejoice in our 150th Jubilee, we recognize with awe the countless blessings the Lord has lavished upon St. Antoninus Church since our founding in 1875. These blessings have formed us into who we are today: joyfully Catholic, alive in the Spirit, and beautifully diverse—a family of faith united in worship, mission, and love.

Yet our Jubilee is more than a remembrance of the past—it is a tribute to the strong foundation that carries us into the future.

With grateful hearts, we give all glory and praise to God, the Lord of the Harvest, for His wondrous works in every generation of our parish..

Below are some interesting historical information and photos :

St. Antoninus Church in Newark was founded in 1875, and in its early years the parish worshiped in two successive wooden church buildings before the permanent stone structure was begun.

First wooden church (1875): When the Dominican friars first arrived at the request of Bishop Michael Corrigan, they quickly erected a simple wooden church for the new parish in Newark’s “West End.”

Second & third wooden churches (1880s–1911):

To serve the growing Catholic population, two successive wooden church structures were built, each larger than the last. This served until plans for the grander French-Gothic style stone church were initiated.

Transition to the stone church (1911–1941):

In 1911, under Father Heffernan, the Dominicans broke ground for a large new stone church. Because of cost, only the basement church (the current lower church) was completed first, dedicated in 1912. The majestic upper church envisioned in the original plans was completed in 1941. The newly completed edifice of St. Antoninus Church was dedicated on September 21, 1941, by Archbishop Thomas J. Walsh .

Our Thanksgiving Jubilee: Sunday October 5, 2025

Mark your calendar for our Grand Thanksgiving Jubilee on Sunday, October 5, 2025, at St. Antoninus. The day begins with Holy Mass at 10:00 AM, followed by a Parade of Nations, a multicultural luncheon, a harvest bazaar and a lively auction

Our Annual Fundraiser

This joyful event also serves as our primary annual fundraiser, supporting both our parish mission and the necessary infrastructure repairs.

Beautiful Tradition

Inspired by a West African tradition, we present our "first fruits" to the Lord during Mass. Families, individuals, and groups bring their gifts forward during the Offertory, offering them in support of the Church’s mission. The priest then blesses the offerers and their gifts at the altar.

The Family Harvest Offering : a Year-Long Offering

Our Jubilee is not just a single day, but a year-long celebration! Every Sunday leading up to October 5 offers an opportunity for families and individuals to make their personal Thanksgiving offering.

Come and Be Part of the Celebration!

Invite family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to enjoy and support our Jubilee celebration.

Let us pray for a blessed and fruitful Thanksgiving Harvest!
